While buying US Airways Dividend Miles with a 100% bonus is a lucrative offer when available, the best deal for those with points already in their account is US Airways’ 100% bonus on shared miles, since transferring miles from one account to another costs less than purchasing miles. We last saw the deal in October and it appears it will return on Monday, December 02, 2013 for 5 days in honor of Cyber Monday. I’ll dub this the “last call” before the award chart devaluation.
The promotion works like last time around: you can transfer 30-50K miles at a cost of one cent per mile along with a 7.5% tax and $30 fee. So say you have 50K in your account and transfer those 50K to a spouse or friend–for a cost of $567.50 you will have added 50,000 miles to your collection! I anticipate prices will be the same this time around, but heed this warning–
Award chart inflation is coming to US Airways and I believe it will be sooner rather than later. I also believe that US Airways will not give advance notice.
Therefore, if you are ready to book a trip, this can be an amazing deal for you–but I am worried about all the US Airways miles sitting in my account and looking to burn them before the year is over. There are a lot of US Airways miles floating around and the chart wil be devalued…it is only a matter of how much and when. You can kiss the 90K business class awards to Europe and North Asia goodbye.
There are some wonderful gems on the US Airways award chart and I will share about two of my latest bookings this week. One is just wild…
With the merger with American Airlines closing on December 9, 2013, it will not be long before the US Airways MasterCard is no longer available. Be sure to take advantage of the 30,000+ miles sign-up offer before this card is pulled.
We’ve seen problems with booking Lufthansa Award space, and a leaked memo suggesting US Airways is acting in bad faith, but most Star Alliance carriers are still bookable–you just have to move quickly and travel on a Wednesday or Saturday if you must travel on Lufthansa.
