Air New Zealand Looks Inward With New Safety Video

Air New Zealand Domestic Travel Safety Video

Air New Zealand has released its latest safety video and unsurprisingly, it focuses on domestic travel. With international borders still closed, the safety video reminds Kiwis they still have a beautiful nation to explore.

New Air New Zealand Safety Video Focuses On Domestic Travel

The new safety video is called, Aotearoa, the 8th Wonder of the World. Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand. It involves a citizen committee debating which part of New Zealand should be named the eighth wonder of the world. Milford Sound? Napier? Steward Island? Waterford Caves? Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu? (a hill in Hawke’s Bay)

In the the end, everyone agrees the nation itself is a wonder of the world.

You can watch it here:

Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty explained the rationale between the new safety video:

“Around 30 per cent of people flying on our domestic network are usually visitors from overseas. In the absence of international visitors, the safety video is a unique way to stimulate further local demand, benefiting local tourism operators, the New Zealand economy and Air New Zealand employees.”

But the safety video is not without an eye toward the return of international travel. Geraghty added:

“The video also assists in supporting the recovery of international tourism once borders reopen. We know the decision-making process for visitors to come to New Zealand will be different into the future – so we need to be building the appeal and desire now in international markets in anticipation of borders reopening. It’s important to keep New Zealand as a visitor destination top of mind.”

Tourism New Zealand Director Commercial René de Monchy called the video “another way we are encouraging Kiwis to do something new, by showcasing the amazing range of experiences on offer in Aotearoa.”

CONCLUSION

This is clearly a low-budget safety video compared to many of the past videos which were twice as long and included celebrities. There’s also more limited humor this time. Perhaps that is appropriate in a time in which the pandemic is still raging. But the video is certainly a reminder of how much I look forward to returning to New Zealand…probably in 2022 at this point.
