Cool Airplane Trick: Use Air Sickness Bag To Create Mount For Phone

Those new TikTok-like videos that are flooding my Instagram feed are overall pretty annoying, but I did learn a genuinely useful trick for mounting my mobile phone on the seatback in front of me when flying in economy class using an air sickness bag.

Use Air Sickness Bag To Create Mount For Mobile Phone

This is simple and self-explanatory. Watch this:

In short, you need a mobile phone case, air sickness back, and a seatback with a folding tray table. Fold the sick bag in half, place it behind your phone, put the case over your phone, then fold the top of the bag over the tray table, then collapse the tray table.

Voila!

Instant seatback IFE.

One user on Instagram commented:

“I once did that in an international flight and an old lady told me to “you can watch tv on the screen too” as if I didn’t know how to turn that screen on “

That’s the beauty of loading your own enterinxtaimet on a phone…even when you are on a flight with screens, those screens become far less vital in keeping you occupied on a long flight.

CONCLUSION

There’s so much wasted space in the realm of “travel hacking,” but I am genuinely impressed by this trick and will try it next time I fly.

Have you tried this trick? What is your travel hack for mounting your mobile phone to your seatback to create instant in-flight entertainment that does not require you to hold up the phone yourself?

There was a blog that was named “Ghetto IFE” after this trick, I think this was like a decade ago. I think they renamed the blog but I forget which it is, not sure if it’s still on BoardingArea.

On a Virgin Australia flight a few weeks ago, the purser saw my predicament as I was holding my phone to watch something, and she brought me an empty takeaway coffee cup, squeezed it flat about 2cm above the base, and it created a perfect stand for an iPhone to sit on the tray table. Genius!

Thanks for the classic love people. I did a DIY Guide many years ago. 😉

I’ve done it less as time goes on, but it raises a question… why have I given up? That’s a long write up in itself.

We’ve moved on a little since iPhones in sick bags, mainly as how we consume media has changed (even though there is a need if you are bored on a flight).

I needed a push to write this. See me in a week 😉
