During our recent trip to Rome, we decided to try out Airbnb Experiences following a recommendation from a friend. We learned how to make a pizza from a pro in Rome and it didn’t disappoint.

What Are Airbnb Experiences?

In addition to rooms for rent, Airbnb sells experiences. Photography sessions, bike tours, cooking classes are all easy to book, relatively affordable and can add to your trip. Most of the “hosts” speak English as that tends to be the market for Airbnb, but other languages are listed as well. We had a friend that uses it frequently and highly recommended the service, after trying our first one out, we agree.

Booking Process, Cost

Searching for experiences begin nearly the same as Airbnb homes, select date, location and choose from a number of drop-down selections to narrow your search. We chose based on the date and time slot we had available during our stay in a location that was nearby.

For our two-hour session, the cost was about €45/person with some of that going to the restaurant/chef and about a quarter of it going to Airbnb. I’m not sure if Lucy should have been free but she loved it and we were happy to pay. The entire process took about 45 seconds to complete once we had decided on which class we would pursue.

Learning How to Make Pizza in Rome

We knew we wanted to learn how to make pizza from scratch as I had recently purchased a pizza oven and we struggled with an “easy” dough recipe.  We met our chef and four other classmates at the restaurant near the kitchen where a table was set up. Each setting had a pile of flour, some yeast and a cup of water ready.

We learned how to make the dough, how to stretch it and store it. We used other professionally prepared dough to make pizzas stretching the dough, spreading the sauce and topping the pies. The chef put them in the oven and managed the cooking, each was done in minutes.

Never before in her life has Lucy eaten a pizza by herself and certainly not one that large. She loved the course and even if my pizza making skills don’t improve, it was a fun activity.

Conclusion

I love the concept of Airbnb Experiences and our first one was a success. The prices seemed to be a good value for money, there’s a large variety available for those who may want to pursue something else, and it helps those in the gig economy. I would absolutely repeat.

What do you think? Have you tried one of Airbnb’s Experiences? What would keep you from trying it?

We did a wine tasting one in Nice, and it took us to 3 wineries in the heart of Rose season. Was absolutely wonderful.

Oh man. Lucy is a cutie.

If she is your daughter, her mother must be very beautiful 🙂

If you can, book these directly outside of Airbnb. There’s no reason why Airbnb should be taking a commission for this sort of thing.
