I sought out the only third-wave coffee shop in Liechtenstein and found it…Demmel Kaffee was oh-so worthwhile!
Best Coffee In Liechtenstein
We decided to take a day trip to Liechtenstein, which I will detail in my next post. But before we got too far into the 25 km-long principality between Austria and Switzerland, we stopped for coffee.
In researching where we would have our coffee, I came upon Demmel, which had a great website and appeared to be a place where the coffee is roasted onsite (always a good sign) and the baristas know how to make proper latte art. If I am asked whether I want my cappuccino small, medium, or large, I tend to walk right out the door…there is but one size and yes, it should be served in a ceramic cup, not a paper one.
My snobbery aside, we had some trouble finding the place. The whole country is small, but we first went to the wrong Landstrasse 85. The same Landstrasse, as it turns out, has a house number 85 in both Vaduz and Schaan. Schaan is the neighboring town to the capital city of Vaduz and home to the coffee shop. I finally found the place, a cute blue building.

I walked in and was warmly greeted in German. Then another guy came out from the back and asked if I was the one who called (when I was at the wrong Landstrasse 85, I had telephoned and, thinking I was in the right place, then asked if Demmel was still in business, to which I was met with a resounding yes).
In any case, we ordered coffee. An Americano for my wife, a cappuccino for my mother-in-law, and a flat white for me. We also added a drink with milk and chocolate for each kid.
The seating area is just a single table, but as we sat around and enjoyed our coffee, I had to smile: I had certainly found the right place.
The staff were charming and shared that they supply a restaurant in Bishop, California with coffee. They also provide wooden yo-yos to my kids.
I took a large back of coffee home with me and will enjoy it after I finish my current bag (from Prospect Coffee in Ventura, CA).
CONCLUSION
Liechtenstein may be a small country, but it has great coffee at Demmel. It was fun to start our time here, especially after a two-hour drive, with a nice cup of coffee.
I think the country is called Liechtenstein, not Lichtenstein.
Totally worthless Grammarly and spellcheck.
Liechtenstein is more than just Vaduz. Great report on a part of Schaan.
Do you speak German? How did you learn? How do you balance travel with school-aged children?
I learned German living in Germany and marrying a German (took four years in high school and only learned the basics).
I try to keep my work trips brief and limited to one week per month.
What a lovely place to enjoy coffee with your family. Demmel Kaffee is a must stop as I look forward to visiting. Too bad I couldn’t find a website for their coffee or store. Perhaps I don’t know where to look?
Thanks for the info. I love authentic coffee from authentic little shops.
