Which Hyatt in Germany is Best?

Matthew KlintPosted onJune 5, 2018November 14, 20239 Comments

There are seven Hyatt hotels in Germany. Which one is best?

The seven properties include:

  • Hyatt Regency Cologne
  • Grand Hyatt Berlin
  • Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf
  • Hyatt Regency Mainz
  • Park Hyatt Hamburg
  • Hyatt Place Frankfurt
  • Hyatt House Dusseldorf

For purposes of this analysis, I am not going to include the last two limited service properties. I’ve stayed in all five hotels recently and provided comprehensive reviews of each one. You can find links to those reviews below.

While my opinion is certainly subjective, I rank the hotels below from worst to best and defend why.

5. Hyatt Regency Cologne

Dining area with large windows showcasing views of the Cologne Cathedral and Hohenzollern Bridge, featuring modern decor and natural light.

Despite its great location, this hotel is in need of a refresh. This is the only hotel on the list that I cannot wholeheartedly recommend. Even so, I enjoyed breakfast and beautiful sunset views from the hotel.

4. Grand Hyatt Berlin

Hotel room interior at Grand Hyatt Berlin featuring a glass table with fruit, a stylish chair, and large windows with sheer curtains, reflecting a modern and comfortable ambiance.

The Potsdamer Platz neighborhood is not my favorite in Berlin, and I felt guests rooms were rather small and the club lounge spread fairly disappointing. I actually prefer the Westin Grand or Adlon Kempinski when in Berlin. Yet this is hotel is a great value for your points with excellent service and nice amenities.

3. Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf

Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf Regency Club Lounge featuring modern decor, large windows with city views, elegant seating arrangements, and a stylish floral centerpiece.

In many ways, this should be #2 on the list. It has great common areas, excellent breakfast, and modern guest rooms. The hotel is also within walking distance of the heart of Dusseldorf.

2. Hyatt Regency Mainz

Hyatt Regency Mainz guest room featuring two twin beds, modern decor, large window with Rhine River view, desk, chair, and television.

This hotel earns a #2 spot on my list for sentimental reasons. It’s not the most modern or fancy Hyatt in Germany, but I love it returning here over and over. Breakfast is always wonderful, the views of the Rhine amazing, and I love the city of Mainz. It’s a great hotel to relax in without the hustle and bustle of a busy city.

1. Park Hyatt Hamburg

Interior view of the Park Hyatt Hamburg, featuring modern wooden furniture, large windows with natural light, and a cozy seating area with green chairs and wooden tables, emphasizing the hotel's elegant atmosphere.

I love this property’s central location in Hamburg, club lounge, and great pool and fitness center. Rooms are large and service shines. Arguably, the hotel is due for a refresh, yet unlike at the Hyatt Regency Cologne, the rooms and common areas offer a more timeless elegance.

Hyatt hotels in Germany are a joke. Especially park Hyatt. It was the worst Ph I have ever visited and certainly many levels below PH Paris Milan and Zurich. The management is even worse. Had much better experience at GH Berlin but still low quality compared to other Hyatt properties in Europe

When I checked into the Park Hyatt Hamburg, I was told upgrades are 50 Euro. I explained I am Globalist and here is how this conversation went.

PH Hamburg: Sir, Upgrades are available, but we are out of complimentary upgrades
Me: As a Globalist, if you have a better room available at check in , wouldn’t I be entitled to it for free?
PH: We are out of free upgrades
Me: Oh ok, is it a suite?
PH: No, but it has a fantastic view (which it did not)
Me: Ok, so in that case, the upgrade should be complimetary
PH: As I said, it would cost 50 euros since we are out of comp. upgrades.
Me: please hold ( I call Hyatt). Hyatt calls hotel and explains how the program works, The manager reluctantly upgraded me to the better view room, but there are not really any better view rooms in this hotel. Either way, I would not stay here again. Nice hotel but not worth the money and the service was not great.

Anybody have any news as to when the Munich Andaz is supposed to open? I’ve been watching it with hopes it’d announce an opening before the start of Oktoberfest (and my visit), but nothing yet. It’s at least showing up as “Coming soon” on Hyatt’s website, which it wasn’t doing in March, but no dates announced, best as I can see.

I’ve got a booking in the new Hampton Munich, as well as a backup if that opening doesn’t happen in August as scheduled, but I’d really like to swoop in on the Andaz to take advantage of status.

As far as quality of facilities, I still think the Hyatt Regency in DUS takes the cake, likely because it is the newest hotel. It doesn’t have a pool like some of the other properties. We will see how the Hyatt in Cologne turns out when the remodel is complete.

I agree that the GH location in Berlin Potsdamer Platz is sterile and uninteresting. The Westin has a far better location with far more things within comfortable walking distance. And often lower prices, too. However, the Westin is tired and could use a refresh and breakfast can be a zoo.

I have always wondered why Hyatt has such a small footprint in Germany. It looks like Berlin, Mainz, Köln, Düsseldorf, and maybe even Hamburg were designed by the same team. Why did they stop and miss München, Frankfurt, Hannover, Leipzig, Dresden?

I would rank the Hyatt Regency Düsseldorf on top: The hotel could easily labeled as a Grand Hyatt and the Club lounge is amazing!
Sure, the HR Cologne is in need of a refurbishment but the Club lounge offers fantastic food and drinks (the smoothies…). I was really disappointed by the Grand Hyatt Berlin: It lacks everything. The Club lounge was overcrowded so we had to leave (instead of standing around). The HR Mainz is just… small.

I’ve stayed at all of these and am also quite sentimental about Cologne and Mainz. 18 years ago I did a bathroom remodel based on the Hyatt Cologne! Guess we both need a refresh! I stayed in an amazing suite with stunning views in Cologne and have never had a bad experience, and Mainz just has the best vibe. At the moment I’m at the Gran Hyatt Berlin. Superficially quite nice, but lacking in the fundamentals. Most importantly a comfortable bed! Had the worst night’s sleep. Have ordered better pillows for tonight so fingers crossed. Housekeeping didn’t wash our tea cups, put back a body lotion with a sliver of lotion in it without a replacement. Didn’t refresh the tea bags. Dropped a q-tip on the floor, didn’t refresh our water bottles. Breakfast was good, but when we checked in she opted us into breakfast and in the morning they had no record of it. So unless we have an amazing experience tonight and tomorrow it’s likely going to be the Westin next time, for nothing else but the bed. Have we lost the Grand Bed in WoH?
