On the heels of its 2017 Skytrax award for Best Airline in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines took home an even bigger crown yesterday…Best International Airline of the Year.
…From the 2nd annual Ghana National Aviation Awards in Accra.
Oh.
So perhaps we take yesterday’s award with a grain of salt and just discuss Ethiopian Airlines for a moment.
I continue to be fascinated by the carrier’s rapid growth (~25% per year). Ethiopian’s route network continues to grow. It is reporting profit. Furthermore, it has a young fleet full of 787 and A350 aircraft, perfectly positioned to capture both strategic midhaul and longhaul traffic. The carrier has an aggressive plan called Vision 2025 to be the best carrier in Africa.
Ethiopian is currently implementing a 15-year strategic plan called Vision 2025 that will see it become the leading aviation group in Africa with seven business centers: Ethiopian Domestic and Regional Airline; Ethiopian International Passenger Airline; Ethiopian Cargo; Ethiopian MRO; Ethiopian Aviation Academy; Ethiopian In-flight Catering Services; and Ethiopian Ground Service. Ethiopian is a multi-award winning airline registering an average growth of 25% in the past seven years.
And arguably it is already there as it continues to rake in awards in the region and around the world.
I want to fly Ethiopian Airlines soon. I’m curious if these accolades are simply because the competition is so bad or because Ethiopian is actually turning the corner and earnestly working to be a world-class airline.
CONCLUSION
Stay tuned…my first flight on Ethiopian Airlines may be sooner than you think.
I just flew Ethiopian this afternoon on a fifth freedom leg between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur on a 788. It was pleasant.
So they covet an award. No wonder the smug on their face as they replied to your request, no we can’t do that. By the end of the day, do they submit to you, or you follow their instruction(s), I wonder….
My experience has been a mixed bag. They have some new 787s but I also flew a knackeered old 777 out of London, I was actually a little nervous about it, comforted myself with the assumption that the wear and tear must just be the interior fittings and that the EU would have maintenance requirements to fly within its airspace. The airline does not follow standard procedures about being seated on the taxi ways. Right after we landed in Addis and we’re still taxiing down the main run way the passengers jumps up and started unloading bags. The FAs jumped up too, I assumed to control the crowd. But no, they started helping with bag removals as our plane weaved to the gate.
I am a frequent flyer of Ethiopian airlines, it is totally rubbish to have been awarded best airlines. The Ethiopian airlines have increased flights without improving its services. The airport facilities are almost zero, in-flight meals are not even to any standard.
Ethiopian may utilize the service of third party agents and service providers around the world to collect, hold and process on our behalf your personal information for the purposes set out in this policy.
