A FedEx pilot was injured after making an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Wednesday.
FedEx Emergency Landing At LAX
FedEx flight 1026, operated by a Boeing 767-300, touched down at LAX just before 4:00AM on Wednesday. Two pilots were onboard. The flight had originated in Newark (EWR). Per an FAA spokesperson:
“The crew was unable to extend the left main landing gear before landing.”
One pilot was taken to a local hospital after suffering a leg injury while exiting the aircraft.
You can watch video of the landing here, which includes a shower of sparks:
I was flying on Wednesday (more on that trip next week) and noticed the FedEx plane tipped upward while taxiing out prior to takeoff.
Not knowing what happened, I snapped the following picture:
I forgot about it until I noticed a blurb about what happened in the Los Angeles Times. Then it dawned on me that I had a picture…
It is no clear t if further damage occurred on landing and how long the aircraft will be out of service.
CONCLUSION
Thankfully, the pilot will just be fine and the incident was minor on the bigger scheme of things. Even so, it is a reminder that for all the precautions we take there are so many things simply beyond our control.
Wow, great work by everyone to get it down safely!
If the 767 was a car it would qualify for antique tags.
That particular aircraft is only three years old. Boeing is still building them.
Like Matthew, I once saw the wreckage of an airplane crash. It was a Fokker 50, an approximately 50 seat twin engine turboprop. The fuselage was in more than one piece and the cross section of 4 seats wide could be seen. Ugh.
