Report: Kristi Noem Fired 737-8 MAX Pilot For Leaving Her Blanket Behind

A new report has raised questions about leadership, decision-making, and internal personnel practices at the Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Kristi Noem and her senior adviser Corey Lewandowski, but what really caught my attention was a crazy incident that involved firing a pilot over a blanket.

DHS Pilot Fired Over Forgotten Blanket, Then Rehired When No One Else Could Fly

At the center of the latest controversy is an episode in which a U.S. Coast Guard pilot was reportedly fired after a personal blanket belonging to Noem was left behind during an aircraft change, only to be reinstated when officials realized there was no backup pilot available to fly the group home. The account appears in a broader exposé by The Wall Street Journal detailing internal upheaval, leadership clashes, and decision-making that has reportedly unsettled some career officials within the department.

According to individuals familiar with the matter, the sequence of events began after Noem and her team were forced to switch aircraft due to a maintenance issue on her Boeing 737-8 Max. Her favorite blanket she had been using was not transferred to the replacement aircraft. That omission reportedly prompted Lewandowski, a close adviser to and rumored lover of Noem, even though both are married, to angrily dismiss the Coast Guard pilot assigned to the flight. The decision was later reversed when it became clear that no other qualified pilot was available to return the aircraft and crew…

“In the blanket incident, Noem had to switch planes after a maintenance issue was discovered, but her blanket wasn’t moved to the second plane, according to the people familiar with the incident. The Coast Guard pilot was initially fired and told to take a commercial flight home when they reached their destination. They eventually reinstated the pilot because no one else was available to fly them home.”

The Department of Homeland Security did not address this incident directly, but told the WSJ that Noem has “made personnel decisions to deliver excellence.” Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Donald Trump continues to have confidence in Noem’s leadership.

The reported incident comes amid what has been described as significant turnover and internal friction at DHS. According to the WSJ and others familiar with the agency’s operations, Noem and Lewandowski have overseen sweeping leadership changes, including the reassignment or removal of a substantial portion of senior officials within Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection to install loyal lieutenants to the Trump administration.

The pilot episode has become emblematic of broader concerns about management style and priorities at the department. Reporting has also highlighted additional points of contention, including DHS’s use of a leased Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, efforts to centralize contract approval authority, and strained relationships with other senior officials.

“The pair have lately been using a luxury 737 MAX jet, with a private cabin in back, for their travel around the country, according to people familiar with the matter. DHS is leasing the plane but is in the process of acquiring it for approximately $70 million.”

Critics argue that these incidents reflect a chaotic internal environment at an agency responsible for national security. Supporters of Noem counter that the leadership actions demonstrate accountability and high standards, and that personnel decisions are made in service of the department’s mission. DHS has maintained that it remains focused on executing its responsibilities effectively…

CONCLUSION

An interesting anecdote has emerged over a Coast Guard pilot and a blanket that calls into question the entire leadership apparatus of the Department of Homeland Security. When a small travel logistics issue escalates into a highly visible personnel controversy, it does fuel questions about leadership at one of the federal government’s most consequential departments.

I agree that Noem is ridiculous and should be held accountable for her horrific conduct. Firing a pilot over a blanket? Wow, such leadership.

Matt, please note that if you posted about Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders flying First Class on a commercial airline, the same commenters here demanding you ‘not get political’ would be brutally attacking their foes. The hypocrisy is insane. Post whatever you wanna post. Comment whatever you wanna comment. It’s all apt.

The corruption and grift is astounding. Noem should be impeached and removed along with many other officials who have abused their authority during the current administration.

This was part of a Wall Street Journal hit piece on Noem and Lewandowski, some of which is probably true. Bad p.r. for Noem. Whatever.

Since this relates to what you say are the failures of Noem’s DHS, I hope you post something soon about the government shutdown and how it will affect TSA operations. It’s a subject matter that actually affects your readers.

Nah, this stuff is what pays the bills. Mr. Klint understands it and is using his hatred of Trump to make money. He’s no different than any other political grifter. And he’s better to look at than Loomer.

I didn’t even mention Trump in this article beyond the statement from Levitt.

Noem is a repugnant person, regardless of her boss. And obviously someone with an unhinged temper and narcissism problem to boast about her shooting her dog in rage. And she should be held accountable for her marital infidelities and more importantly, for misappropriation of taxpayer funds.

I don’t believe in government shutdowns and will address the TSA issue. That said, I sure appreciate that Dems are trying to hold ICE agents accountable, including by banning masks.

            February 14, 2026 at 10:15 pm

Matthew, I strongly disagree about the mask issue. There are sufficient loonies that would ID an ICE agent from a photo and harass (or worse) the agent or family. Allow them to wear masks, but require a visible ID number be worn that allows DHS to know who is who without a public ID.

The WSJ has hardly been publishing “hit pieces”. This actually happened. It’s factual. But rather than admit that the United States has a horrible problem with its wildly dysfunctional government of Temu despots, pseudo-conservative MAGA addicts continue to blame anyone but the people at the root of the problem. They’d best prepare themselves for a Congressional wipeout at the upcoming midterms.

I’m a conservative. I support Trump and ICE. But Noem sounds like a terrible leader. Typical elitist mindset to fire a pilot over such a small issue. Here’s a thought, maybe take responsibility of your own personal items? You think the pilot should be in charge of your damn blanket when he is likely preflighting the new aircraft and getting it ready for your luxury tour across the country? What a joke she is.

A stunning example of the ineptitude of this administration. Poser Kristi “THE KAREN” Noem loses her blankie and fires the pilot. Wah! Wah.! Too bad the pilot wasn’t able to completely get away. The Soap Opera continues….

Accountable for Infidelity?? What about Bill Clinton? Nothing ever happened to him for his infidelity and sexual harassments. Did you ever write about that? If this story is true I hope Trump lets them both have it and a public apology to the pilot! What a disrespect to someone who is clearly amazing at their job and has served our country.

I find it so strange, but telling, that everyone wants to attack the messenger and no one is willing, other than dear Maryland, to actually address what Noem did. Firing the Coast Guard pilot over a blanket? Democrat or Republican, it seems to me such conduct renders one unfit for public duty, especially in a senior leadership role.

It’s fascinating to me that the same people who cheered me on for attacking the Biden administration and its sheer ineptitude during the pandemic are the same folks lamenting that my blog has “become” political or that I suffer from TDS when in reality the sycophants who make excuses for Trump and his administration are blind to the fact that they are working against their own self-interest.

Matthew, thanks for covering this. I appreciate what you’re doing.

How can it be TDS when this factually occurred? MAGA is ok with the pilot getting fired for such a petty issue, when the blanket wasn’t even in his purview of responsibility? Has Noem taken responsibility for Pretti’s murder yet?

If really a Coast Guard Pilot, then they would been a commission officer and couldn’t be really fire. Probably let go from the detail and was binge sent home, then they figure out only pilot available to fly it. 737s would not be a common plane for Coast Guard Pilots to fly on.

Is there no end to the open malignant pettiness and feral vindictiveness of the people who are allegedly governing us? When taken as a whole, AG Bondi, Secretaries Noem and Higseth and ODNI Director Gabbard are so woefully beyond their capacity and competence that it is a disgrace they are continue to serve, and let’s not even get into the likes of Steven Miller or Corey Lewandowski (whose only claim to fame appears to be his bedroom antics). With any luck, these people will be tried and convicted of high crimes and misdemeanor at the conclusion of this doomed regime.

this entire administration of grifters and pedo protectors have zero credibility. Noem, who is by a large factor, the “poortest” member of tRump’s cabinet, is doing “faux riche” along with her other cosplaying. Someone should give Rudy her telephone number and remind her that “everything tRrump touches, especially reputations, die.” If Noem said the sun was going to rise in the East, we should all get up to verify. This is how low her and the rest of the gang’s credibility is these days.
