I’m live-blogging my SAS EuroBonus SkyTeam Million Mile challenge this week. Click here for background and route information.
Not only did we stop at the LEGO Store in Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (CPH), but I even bought something for Augustine to keep him entertained. He’s over the moon and already in a much better state than he was this morning…
LEGO is a Danish company and the brand is very popular in Scandinavia. At CPH Airport, there is a LEGO store just around the corner from the SAS Lounge.
We stopped and Augustine had another field day. But this particular store was far better than the one at JFK because it had a special assemble-your-own mini-fig area. Essentially for 85 crowns (about 12 USD) you could custom build three mini-figures. I told Augustine he could go ahead and do this (even though boarding was about to begin for our SAS flight) and he was so excited…so much more excited than he was to get on a flight.
He asked me to help him look for pirate pieces (his favorite LEGO collection) and we were able to find an imperial guard officer and pirate. For this third mini-fig, he chose a shirtless guy “with nice abs.” Ugh, Lord help me not to be narcissistic or raise one…
I paid and we were off to our gate to catch the SAS flight. Augustine was smiling from ear to ear.
Bribe!!! Works every time! lol!
Still wishing good luck and no problems and lots of fun for you both on this adventure!
Amazing! He will behave much better now. Seriously, he is taking one for the team in being your buddy on this trip so sometimes you have to get him something.
Kids are so resilient. Glad you didn’t let the haters get to you!
That said, when I read your last post, my one thought was maybe don’t drag him to every lounge you are eligible for at each airport like you would on a solo review trip. Either let him post up somewhere to rest for the whole layover or do something different than just a lounge even if there isn’t time to leave the airport. This Lego store is a perfect example of the latter strategy. I imagine there could be some interesting content to be had taking advantage of some of the non-lounge offerings at SIN with Augustine, for example.
Either way, he’s not going to remember the low points of the trip, he’s only going to remember the good times he had with his dad on this trip in the long run. We all have our moments, even as adults, the important thing is you are spending time together showing him something important to you and, honestly giving him a sense of at least part of what his father does for a living. Years from now you will both look back on this fondly.
Matthew, you weren’t tempted to get one of the Lego aircraft collectable kits for yourself? It is amazing that during the height of the smash-and-grabs in SoCal, Lego stores in the OC were seemingly getting hit more than the Nike store in LA.
The relocated/new LEGO store at CPH is much nicer than the one they used to have.
Some years back, CPH baggage claim used to have some free Lego play areas with a bunch of loose Legos. Not sure when or if they removed them.
The two best airports in Europe for me to get shut-eye in private in the darkness airside when in economy class? BRU and CPH. But playing with Legos is more fun for a kid than having to sleep when they aren’t interested in sleeping.
Sleeping at airports is still sort of a speciality of mine. 😀
