Live and Let’s Fly Weekend Digest: March 19, 2017

Matthew Klint Posted onMarch 19, 2017November 14, 2023 Leave a Comment

Hello from Stuttgart. Thanks to these anti-jetlag tips, I quickly adjusted to Central Europe Time and have acclimated back to life in Germany.

Little Augustine is meeting many family members for the first time and we’ve had a very pleasant week.  The highlight was the flight over — instead of a 10hr nightmare trying to keep the baby quiet, he slept the entire flight. What a relief!

News this week has included disappointing Cathay Pacific earnings and the effect of the President’s budget proposal on travel. I continue to hammer U.S. airlines on the double-standard on subsidies and will do so again later today. The point is not beat a horse dead, but encourage more reasoned discussion. Some of the comments in a post I did yesterday obfuscate what I consider a clear issue of hypocrisy. We need to understand this issue carefully as it will only intensify when oil prices go up again or recession strikes.

Here’s a review of the week’s stories–

The Real Reason Cathay Pacific is Losing Money

Cathay Pacific Earnings

This article was a follow-up from a story the day before entitled Ouch! Disappointing Loss for Cathay Pacific. A reader berated me and others who had covered the earnings results for failing to zero in on fuel hedging. Check out the comments section — the discussion is thought-provoking and divided.
