Good ol’ Michael O’Leary. As if the standing seats and coin-operated lavatories were not enough, Ryanair’s chief has a new plan to save money: get rid of co-pilots.
O’Leary told Bloomberg that having a second pilot in the cockpit is inefficient and proposed training one of the "stewardesses" to step in and assist or take over should a problem arise.
"Really, you only need one pilot. Let’s take out the second pilot. Let the bloody computer fly it," he said. "If the pilot has an emergency, he rings the bell, he calls her in, she could take over."
The British Airlines’ Pilots Association is outraged, but not because they fear job cuts or O’Leary actually following through on his plan.
A BALPA spokesman condemned the comments, saying: "Are there no lengths to which he will not go to get publicity?
