Forgive me for the title, I could not resist…
A fluttering bat greeted passengers on an early morning Spirit Airlines flight to New Jersey. No, this time it was not an emotional support pet.
Peter Scattini, a passenger onboard the 6:00AM Spirit flight from Charlotte to Newark, was awakened to a commotion onboard. Like any fast-thinking 23-year-old, he pulled out his mobile phone and began filming. What was going on? Oh, just a loose bat in the cabin…of the animal variety. Check out the video below:

Passengers were screaming and ducking for cover…I probably would have too, and I even know that bats are harmless mammals that don’t hurt humans.
Eventually, another passenger trapped the bat between a cup and a book and dumped it into the lavatory for the remainder of the flight. There’s no word if the bat survived.
This is incident reminded some about a classic episode of The Office where Dwight catches a bat.
But something else went through my mind. I don’t know why, but this whole incident reminds me of the grocery store checkout line growing up:
That dates me…
Just another friendly flight on Spirit Airlines. I had my own flight on Spirit earlier this week…no bats, but a lot of batty behavior. I look forward to sharing that with you in a future post.
I would’ve sing, “nanananananana…..”
Rabies risk. There is no such thing as a large rabies risk. But this is as high risk as it gets, closed space with risk of scratches, bites and aerosolized bat spit. The rabies vaccine is 5 doses and super painful. I wonder if in the “spirit” of full disclosure, the airlines informed the passengers of this risk.
Not the typical danger one associated with air travel.
Wrong! Rabies from ESA is pretty much possible.
