UberX Finally Available at LAX

After months of behind-the-scenes negotiations with recalcitrant regulators, UberX will finally be allowed to pick up passengers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) starting today, January 20, 2016, at 8am PT.

Uber has suffered a string of setbacks in trying to bring its low-cost UberX service to LAX but the final issues have been solved and UberX will join Lyft, which has been in service at LAX since December, in providing low-cost ride-sharing to airport users.

A couple things to keep in mind:

1. You’ll be hit with a $4 surcharge if your destination begins or terminates at LAX. This money will go into the airport’s general fund. Taxis tack on the same $4 surcharge for trips that originate at LAX, but not for journeys to the airport.

2. UberX pickups will be on the departures level, meaning you will have to carry your checked baggage upstairs. I see this as an advantage, especially during the busy evening hours when the arrivals level is packed. “Ride Sharing” signs will be placed upstairs to signal pickup points outside each terminal.
