Flights to Cuba

According to Bloomberg, US carriers will be able to fly to Cuba later this year with up to 120 daily flights to the island (20 to Havana, 10 each to the other nine international airports).  An agreement signed in December of last year will be “formalized” on Tuesday which will pave the way for carriers to schedule regular flights to the island nation.

American and Jet Blue had already ramped up their “charter” flights to the island as the restrictions on travel to Cuba eased last year adding flights from Los Angeles and New York respectively.

American has stated that they will continue operations from Miami and build from other hubs, United is also looking to get in on the new destination as well as Delta.  Southwest stated they continue to pursue options as well.

There is no firm timeline for when air travel will start for any of the carriers, but based on their activity prior to the ban formally being lifted, it would seem that flights will be added as soon as possible.  American and Delta likely are best positioned with hubs in Miami and Atlanta, both could serve the island (just 90 miles from Key West) with small regional jets to start which both carriers have in abundance.
