How to Obtain a Visa on Arrival in Tanzania

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 3, 2017January 3, 2017 341 Comments

Obtaining a visa on arrival in Tanzania turned out to be easier than I thought. Follow these steps and you’ll have no trouble securing a visa upon arrival in Tanzania.

Note that a visa-on-arrival is available in the following ports of entry in the United Republic of Tanzania, which includes all major sea and airports. My journey was into Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam (DAR), the largest airport in Tanzania.

A visa on arrival is available to passport holders of these nations. Note there are several seemingly random nationalities that are exempt. For example, citizens of Cyprus and Romania do not require a visa. All “western” passport holders are eligible for a visa on arrival.

The cost of a single-entry visa is $50 for citizens of most countries, but $100 for Americans. A multiple-entry visa is $100, including for Americans. Transit visas are $30 and valid for 14 days.

Here’s how I obtained my tourist visa:

1. Onboard your flight or ship into Tanzania, you will receive two visa forms that should be filled out prior to landing.  They look like this:

Don’t worry if you do not get these forms: they are also available at your port of entry.

2. Once you reach your port of entry, follow the signs for “International Arrivals”. In my case in Dar es Salaam (DAR) I walked down a flight of steps into an arrival area.

3. An immigration attendant directed me toward a queue in which uniformed immigration agents sit behind desks. Once I reached the window, I handed over my passport and the two forms I had filled out earlier. I requested to pay by credit card but was told “the machine was broken” and asked to pay in “crisp, new” cash. Thankfully I had cash on me. Be prepared to pay in cash and ensure that your bills are unmarked and recently issued.

The official Tanzania visa website indicates up to five passport photos may be necessary, but I was not asked for one.

4. After processing my paperwork, I was directed to wait nearby for my name to be called. Around the corner were several additional agents preparing the visas.

5. About 15 minutes later my name was called and I picked up my passport, which now included the following full-page visa sticker:

6. Visa in hand, I proceed to immigration. Moments later, I was stamped into Tanzania and on my way to my hotel.

CONCLUSION

Thankfully, the process was easy and relatively quick. Large red signs condemning bribes adorned the immigration area and I never encountered anyone who even hinted at a bribe–

Note: Zanzibar is semi-autonomous. Thus, you will not be stamped out of Tanzania when traveling to Zanzibar, but you will have to go through separate immigration formalities upon reaching Zanzibar (no additional fees, though).

Your experience was certainly quicker than mine 5 years ago. They had about a hundred passports that they were processing and there was no specific order in which they were processed. They had a hard time pronouncing names so they’d just slam your passport to the window and you had to notice your photo.

        Dear Matthew,

could you please answer me 2 questions.

        1) Do I Need an entry visa, coming as Austrian citizen( EU) , being only one night at Dar es Sallam Airport, My Arrival will be at 10 pm and the connecting flight to Malawi at 7:45 am. I wont leave the airpoirt, so I m in the transitzone.

        2) In case that I do need an entry visa,: If I take a single entry visa for 90 days at the Airport and leave it 8 hours later, is it possible to take another single entry visa 1 month later again, as I will come back to Dar es Saalam.

Nobody could answer me this question up to now.

Thank you sooooooo much for your Kind answer,
        Anna

          Hi Anna,
as a frequent traveler to East Africa, i might answer your question. 1)Each time you enter the country a new single visa is required. But if you stay in transit zone for another international flight, no visa is needed
          2) I travel myself often by own car in and out the country of Tanzania. Even returning to Tanzania within short period, there was never any problem to receive another visa.

Hello, I am arriving Tanzania via Kenya on ground and would like to apply for an online visa before arrival. Do you know the correct website to use? All the ones I have seen require shipping your passport, and I am under a time crunch. I also want to make sure I bring all the proper documentation needed besides the cash. Thank you in advance for your help.

Wendy, you don’t need to use a website.

Just follow my instructions and you will have no trouble obtaining one upon arrival in Tanzania.

I need to calculate how much time is needed between entering Tanzania at Dar es Sallam Int Airport and taking a national flight to Kilimanjaro Airport. Do you think 2h15 min could be enough with all formalities like getting visa, luggage and checking in again??

Hey Matthew, great information! So I just got my passport and I will be flying from Phoenix, Arizona to Kilimanjaro Airport. Do I qualify for the visa on arrival? (Your link of ports of entry is not working so I couldn’t verify this.) I did some reading and it turns out that some airlines like KLM (My route is Phoenix to Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro) do no let you board if you do not have the visa before hand. Is this true?

Hi Matthew. I have read obtaining a visa on arrival is the best option. However, I am traveling with my 17 year old nephew from the Atlanta, GA to Kilimanjaro Airport and am concerned there may be issues in obtaining a visa on arrival. Would appreciate any insight you may have on pros/cons of obtaining visas on arrival in this situation. I have authorization letters signed by both parents and a notary as indicated from the Tanzania Embassy.

That’s a great question and I’d hate to give you a wrong answer. While I don’t think that the policy of Tanzania is as draconian as South Africa’s, I would check with the Embassy of Tanzania to ensure that you do this right. You are smart not to leave it to chance.

I’ve been here for two weeks for Kilimanjaro climb and safari. I’m on my way to Zanzibar now. Love the country so far. I hope my handwritten visa will work if I want to visit again.

Americans pay the same, whether transit or tourist.

You can pay in USD (cash only, must be new/crisp)

You just have to fill out a form at the port of arrival. The ship will likely have those forms onboard.

Thank you so much for sharing and helping us out my friend.

I couldn’t open the link to the nations that can obtain a visa on arrival.

I hold a Lebanese passport and I applied for a visa through the Embassy in Kuwait, and it has been 5 weeks with no reply. My flight is booked already for August 31st, 2 weeks from now.

Is there any other way ?
    Thanks!

We are flying from UK to Dar Es S via Nairobi (2 hours in transit, not leaving airport)
After 5 days on the mainland and safari, we then fly from Selous to Zanzibar for the rest of our holiday.
The Tanzanian Embassy here in UK tell me i do NOT need a yellow fever vac. My travel agent says i do.
Im hoping not, as I have an auto immune problem plus over 60, making the yellow fever vac inadvisable.
WILL a letter of exemption from my doctor here in Uk do????

I am an Indian citizen living in India and have a business trip to Zanzibar coming up and as per your response to Dipak, a visa on arrival is possible. They mention a yellow fever vaccination. I am 69 years old. Do I need to have the vaccination before I emplane? And what documents do I need? Their website http://www.tanzrepdelhi.com gives a list . Cheers

Due to your age, you should not require one. However, it seems quite arbitrary and that white and brown (i.e. non black) visitors are especially targeted. If you have one, your international vaccination card will be sufficient. But if not, don’t get a shot just in case.

Hi Matthew, Thanks for the info in your blog.
(as I’m retired) I want to stay in Tanzania on and off for a year in total. ( Also I will be visiting friends in Kenya). reading the Visa requirements a single entry will allow you 90 days in total.
A multi entry visa valid for 1 year will allow 120 days aggregate
which is the best option/s for me ? to allow me the longest time possible.
If i get single visa’s would I be able to go out of the country and get 4 visa’s to stay 4 x 90 days ?
    Any ideas

Hi Matthew, Thanks for the details.

We are planning to visit Tanzania with our 19 year old daughter, who will be coming from a 3 month gap program in Kenya (she has the Yellow Fever vac/documentation). None of us have Tanzania visas. We are all U.S. citizens. From your article, we shouldn’t have a problem getting the visas at the airport. But, since our daughter will be coming from Kenya (and not with us) I don’t think she will have access to US $. Do you have any thoughts on that? Would she be able to get crisp unmarked US $ from a bank in Kenya? Or at the airport in Tanzania?

I know you didn’t need passport photos for your visa, but if she does need them, do you know if there is a place to get them made at the airports?

    Thanks for your feedback!

    Proper Online Application Form?

Hi Matthew. Are you aware of a site where I can download a current, VOA for Airport Application form? I’ve not found one yet. I thought I’d have one already filled out prior to landing, in case we’re not given one on board.
    Thank you, Matthew!!!

Hello, I have three questions: I am Finnish and flying to Zanzibar from Brazil. I would like to know

    a) As a proof of a ticket out of Tanzania, is an unpaid reservation of a flight out of the country enough (since my travel plans are still open) or does it have to be a paid onward ticket out of Tanzania? Is a bus ticket ok or does it have to be a flight?

    b) Will they accept my yellow fever vaccination card? I had my yellow fever vaccination the year 2008 – exactly 10 years ago. Should I renew it before taking a flight or can I trust that they will accept my vaccination card? Brazil is yellow fever area.

    c) I am from Finland. Can I have a visa on arrival in the airport of Zanzibar?

      @Maaria:

a.) held reservation is fine for proof of onward journey
b.) I would risk the Yellow Fever card from 10 years ago, but this is just my best speculation
c.) No problem obtaining visa at airport.

Meaning do you think we will have any problems getting our visa after 10pm? Any help would be appreciated. We did not want to risk sending our passports off to get a visa prior to arrival.

The ONLY points of entry issuing Tanzanian visas are Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro airports. You will not be able to get one at any other port, or at border crossings. You cannot obtain one from outside Tanzania. Very few airlines distribute entry paperwork and the country forms get VERY MIXED UP on the counters at Dar. It can take a VERY long time to get your passport stamped, as many international fights arrive around 3:00 a.m. and the lines are very long. Sometimes an officer will ask for your passport and $$ and then disappear, which can be disconcerting, but they always reappear with your documents. The process is much better organized and faster at Kili. Please bring new (2006 or later) $50.00 or $100.00 bills. Business visas require a letter from a host business, usually additional paperwork, and will be much more expensive. It is worth it. Tanzanian’s are amazing and you will be welcomed joyously.

Also, my tavel group are flying into Dar before connecting to Killimanjaro Airport. I’m guessing they will have to go through customes and get the visa once they land in Dar and not doing this at Kil.Airport. There is a 1hour 10min time gap before there connecting flight, do you think they will have time? Thank you.

        August 24, 2018 at 4:40 pm

Marcus it depends with the time you arrive at JKNIA (Dar Airport), I am from Tanzania and the airport gets a bit crowded in the afternoon when you have KQ, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, SAA and Qatar etc etc all arriving within a span of like 1hr window. Then the immigration & arrival lounge will be crowded. If you arrive with night flights like SwissAir, KLM, Turkish etc usually the area is less crowded and you can process your visa much faster. Find out which flight your group is using if you land in Dar between 4pm-5pm its very crowded most of the days.

Clearly this is less than 14 days. We have return (onward) tickets to Kenya (and the U.S.). We also have a Kenya visa. Does this itinerary qualify to get a transit visa?

Yes, you can get a transit visa. But for U.S. passports, it is the same price so you might as well just get the tourist visa and have the chance to re-enter Tanzania (just in case).

your successful experience with visa on arrival encouraged us not to send our passports to Sweden. However, we still cannot find confident answer on our case: our flight is from Istanbul to Kilimanjaro (with a 55 minutes stop at Zanzibar). Flight is operated by Turkish airlines and it is only indicated that a flight is with one stop (Zanzibar). Perhaps we will not be asked to move from transit zone thus we will not require the visa. However maybe you know this for sure?
Also we will return to Zanzibar from Arusha and then go back to Dar es Salaam through the harbor. Will we require a multiple entry visa?

I read that you can only apply for a Vista if you have proof of your outgoing/ return flight.
    What ‘Proof’ is that?

If I’ve brought the outgoing tickets from one airline which I’ve then printed out 24hrs before the initial outbound flight, but my return tickets are from a separate airline and can only be printed out 24hrs before that fligjt, but I obviously can’t print them out as the return flight is 3 months away.

So I’m basically asking what form of proof will they be asking for, such as email the confirmation with my e-ticket number, will that information be valid as I won’t have my actual return tickets on me?

He is a touring musician and I won’t have a chance to apply for a visa in the UK on his behalf with his passport as he is away with it in the US now, and then heads to Auz, then onto Tanzania. I am almost 100% sure he will be able to apply for a visa upon entry. Can you please advise? He is there on holiday with family for a couple of weeks. He will have proof of return flights.

    Thanks!

    Chloe

    Hi Matthew,

When you went to Tanzania, were you required to get the yellow fever vaccine? I won’t be coming from an endemic country, thus not needed according to the CDC. But some websites say that they will refuse entry and insist on giving you the shot when you arrive and need to get the visa.

Thanks and hope to hear from you.

I was not asked to produce it in Dar Es Saalam, but it was required when I got off the boat in Zanzibar before I could enter the island.

    Hi Matthew,

I’m going to Zanzibar from Ethiopia (from Paris) with my husband who is French. I am American. I read that we don’t need to get visas ahead of time, but we can apply upon arrival in Zanzibar. Is that correct? And yes, I see we need to have our yellow fever vaccination cards, but how recent does the vaccination have to be? SO it’s 100 dollars for me as an American, and 50 dollars for French citizens for the visa, is that correct?
And lastly, do we pay cash or credit card upon arrival in Zanzibar?

    Thank you very much.

The vaccine need not be recent. You are correct on visa prices. Plan to pay with USD, crisp and new.

Thanks for your post. I am a citizen of India traveling to Tanzania. Do I need to get a invitation letter for getting a tourist visa to Tanzaina?

For getting Visa on arrival, do I need any other document apart from the below:
    – a valid passport with an empty visa page
    – application form, duly completed
    – 2 passport size photos
    – Copy of return ticket
    – Proof of yellow fever vaccination
    -Payment of application fee($50)

I am landing at Dar es Salaam, Is there a separate immigration at Zanzibar?

Immigration is separate in Zanzibar, but you can use the same visa, which you will be able to obtain upon arrival as an Indian citizen.

A question and a comment. Are the forms to be filled out for an on-arrival visa application to Tanzania available on-line? If I remember correctly, the form required for a pre-arrival visa is not the correct one.

As I recall when I went through the on-arrival process in 2016, no photos were required but they take my photograph during the processing steps. Unless I’m wrong about something here, that the Tanzanian visa you show above contains your photograph confirms my remembrance. You might mention this.

    • Matthew Reply
      January 8, 2019 at 3:01 pm

You are correct on both accounts. The form is not available online, but your airline will provide it. If they don’t, it is available upon arrival. While two passport photos are technically required, I also wasn’t asked for them. Indeed, they take your picture during the processing, though they used my actual passport picture for the picture on the visa.

Interesting… am I correct that they somehow duplicated the photo in your passport and applied it to the visa, or did they use one of your passport photos that you brought with you?

They used the photo in my passport: I never surrendered any photos (though I had them). Note sure how, but I’m sure that is easily accomplished with a scanner and the right software.

Hello! This article was very helpful. My husband, two children and I are traveling abroad for six months. Our plans have changed and we would love to visit Tanzania! I have two questions: 1. Are visas on arrival ever denied? I’m worried about waiting to do it until the airport, but we need our passports with us and are in lots of different countries until we would go in June. Will I be able to get on a plane going to Tanzania without a visa? 2. Do you recommend getting the Yellow Fever vaccine? The CDC says they don’t generally recommend it, but it would be for my two little kids so I’m leaning towards just getting it to be safe. Thanks!

Hi Matthew, thank you for the info. My mom is planning to go to Tanzania with my adult brother who doesn’t work due to medical issues. They are planning to get their visa upon arrival since they are we are US citizens. When it comes to filling the occupation, does he just put “not currently working”? How can mom and my brother go about it ? Can this be a problem? Mom will be supporting him there. He is awesome but medical issues has kept him from working since he was a little boy. We all want him to go and experience life like everyone else. Thank you.
