I hate to say it, but I think Matt was “had”. It’s ok. The purpose of the Westjet ad was to send warm Christmas sentiments and it worked. But I think:

    It was staged.

Look at the ad with a critical eye. Note the different switchovers in angles as various people make decisions. In reality TV, you can sometimes see off to the side cameramen moving back and forth, but for normal people off the street, such camera work would be offputting. It would remind them they’re on camera and increase their nervousness.

“Hey person off the street! See those 3 cameramen watching you at different angles? They’re waiting to see if you want to have a fun, decadent vacation OR let someone whose kid is sick be miserable. What do you say? The world is watching!”

In the very least, a normal person’s face under such scrutiny would expose a variety of awkward tells as they go through the decision. Or perhaps the people who ultimately decided, hey, THEY need the vacation more than sick kids and their parents do, were just not included in the final cut and they picked out the best, nicest folks.

Truth be told, I might be one of the scrooges. It’s one thing for an airline executive to decide to give away a few dozen trips for a wonderful Christmas ad to generate warmth for their brand but THEY are still going to go on as many 1st class vacations as THEY like. It’s a matter of how much the decision impacts the person personally.

Heck, if I was put in that situation with my kid, quite frankly, I’d be insulted being put on the spot like that. Sort of reminds me of this:

Yeah, I’ll pull the sandwich out of the kid’s mouth.
