A Few Thoughts on the Park Hyatt New York

Matthew Klint Posted onFebruary 3, 2016December 5, 2016 2 Comments

I had a quick business trip to Boston and New York over the weekend and ended up at the Park Hyatt New York on Sunday/Monday for what turned out to be a two-day, one-night stay. Here are three takeaways on Hyatt’s flagship North American property.

1. Service was over-the-top good

Every single employee that I interacted was perfectly polished: exceedingly courteous, gracious, and helpful. I was traveling with my friend John and he was rather demanding in customizing his room service order (to the point that I would have rolled my eyes and told him to go make his own food…). But the room service team was polite, patient, and went out of its way to accommodate, anticipate, and deliver.

2. The property is amazingly luxurious

Every inch of this property is luxurious and the attention to detail is amazing. The floors, walls, artwork, lamps, furniture, glasses, plates, and every other accoutrement was five-star quality. The food was delicious, the pool amazing, the fitness center and spa grand, and the location perfect. The in-room minibar even had Krug…

3. It pays to ask nicely

We were arriving early (around 9am) and I figured it would not hurt to ask for an early check-in. Worst-case scenario we could drop our bags off and walk through Central Park, just one block away, then have lunch. I sent an e-mail to the hotel’s general address found on its website (nycph.guestrelations@hyatt.com). A few hours later, I received a note back that the hotel would be happy to accommodate the early check-in and had even upgraded my room. Was it because I was a blogger? Well, the room was booked under my friend’s name without status so I doubt it. We arrived at 8:30a and the room was ready. It never hurts to ask nicely — you or I have no right to expect something like an early check-in, but this hotel seems to go out of its way to accommodate its guests.

A full review is in the queue (though it will be awhile, for there are several other properties that must be reviewed first). If it is not clear, I had a wonderful stay.

I agree – the property is amazing. Their pool and gym are great perks. Also loved the bathroom. However, their front desk leaves a lot to be desired. I arrived @ 2pm and was turned away from the 1st check in point (downstairs) because our room wasn’t ready. They promised a call as soon as the room as ready. Never got one. This seems to be a consistent problem for me at Hyatt (I give up!). Anyway, came back at 5pm, checked in with no problem, but they didn’t deliver my luggage for 2 and 1/2 hours! It took 4 phone calls to get it to the room. I was late for dinner.

It’s a great property, but for $900 a night I expected a amazing everything. Overall, not sure if I would return. I think that I enjoy some of the Kimpton properties almost as much (Ink 48).
