A Gift in the Mail from United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onJuly 5, 2013December 9, 2016 9 Comments

I do not get much snail mail anymore, save for far too many credit card apps and various bar association items, so it is always just a little gratifying to see something out of the ordinary. Today, a large envelope arrived from United Airlines.

United understandably hedges its bet when describing the purpose of the new baggage handle, but the clear implication in stating–

it will help to identify your luggage quickly — especially when locating gate checked, green-tagged bags on the jet bridge — so you can be on your way faster.

is that gate-checked “green tagged” bags with this yellow handle affixed to them will be unloaded and delivered first. If true, that would be a very positive step. Flying out of Burbank, every trip requires that I gate check a bag and I am often one of the last to get my bag back in San Francisco. This small gesture marks a very tangible way to reward loyalty and improve service on United. Hopefully it will not just be deocration.

I have a United Express flight on Monday, I’m interested to see what effect, if any these yellow tags will have on delivery.

To me, it doesn’t mean what you think it means – priority gate check tags. I read it as you’ll be on your way quicker because you can find your bag mnore easily among the black gate-checked rollaboards.

I also got the baggage handle. However, it won’t convince me to spend $10,000 dollars to maintain my 1K status. I am still deciding which program to switch to.

I haven’t taken an RJ flight yet (though there have been statements by UA personnel on FT supporting your interpretation), but I can say that my bag (with yellow tag) was third off the carousel last week in HNL, and that was off a 772 with 12 GF and 49 BF pax.

Which statuses get this? I’ve seen online in some places that Plat and up get it but in others that only 1k and GS get the tag. Help?

I think Plats and above received it (or were supposed to).
