One artist turned a flight delay into a perfect moment to sketch a picture of the captain of his Singapore Airlines flight, and then surprised him with the picture.
Artist Uses Delay To Paint Portrait Of Singapore Airlines Captain, Then Surprises Him With It
James Lim is known for producing portraits and is extremely talented. He calls his mission “spreading kindness through art.”
Recently, his Singapore Airlines flight was delayed. While sitting in the gate area of Singapore Changi Airport, he noticed the captain of his flight also waiting out the delay with his head down. He took the opportunity to sketch a portrait of the captain and even painted it with his portable watercolor set.
I find it very hard to be productive during a flight delay, especially if the flight has not boarded. If I am anticipating boarding–especially if I do not know how long it will be–I cannot start working or even distract myself with music…maybe that’s just me, but I just want to get on the plane.
So I particularly admire Lim for turning “lemons into lemonade” and using the time so wisely.
And I love the attitude of the artist, who writes “After rain there’s a rainbow. The delay was inevitable, but the skies were so clear after the rain. Thank you for the smooth and comfortable journey, captain!”
He was flying economy class and upon arrival, asked if he could present his portrait to the captain. He did…and captured it on video. Look at the face of the captain! That smile is priceless and it is those little moments, those little connections that bring such delight and joy to life.
So kudos to Lim for his kind act and for showing all of us how to make the most of a flight delay!

Talented artist, and a kind gesture… But the illustration is missing an important stripe!
Doesn’t look that much like him.
Nice story.
But what does flying in economy have anything to do with this?
Trying to sneak in few extra word count?
