Great Coffee In Antigua, Guatemala

Matthew Klint Posted onOctober 4, 2021November 14, 2023 21 Comments

Not only is Antigua a charming little city, it also offers a number of delicious coffee options.

Great Coffee in Antigua, Guatemala

You can work up quite an appetite walking though the colonial streets of Antigua, but whenever you need a break there is a café nearby.

Demonstrating the power of Google, I searched for “flat white” and was directed to Fat Cat Coffee, which received very high ratings.

No. 14 A
4a Calle Oriente
Antigua 03001, Guatemala

I was warmly greeted as I entered and ordered a flat white. The place was crowded, which is often a good sign. But there was also no line out of the door like you see at every airport Starbucks (don’t get me started…).

The coffee was very tasty and strong, with nodes of chocolate and orange.

I tried to a buy a few bags of coffee to take home, but their credit card machine did not work (at least for my card). Thankfully, I had a bit of cash and was able to pay for my drink.

Just across the street was my next stop.

No. 5
4a Calle Oriente
Antigua 03001, Guatemala

You may recall from my earlier report that I also visited this company’s cafe in Guatemala City. I actually did not make the connection until I sat down and actually looked at the sign. Once again, what drew me in was the premium coffee machine and beautiful interior.

This is apparently a new coffee shop in Antigua and it is beautifully done. 12 Onzas has food as well – the toast looked tasty.

The team working here was very kind: so friendly, especially when they found out I was visiting from Los Angeles. While I was sipping my drink one barista came up and made sure it was to my satisfaction. That is great service.

CONCLUSION

The problem with coffee is that you can only have so much at a time. Antigua is full of enticing coffee shops and my only regret is that I could not try more places during my short visit.

This is part of my Guatemala trip report.

Antigua looks cool. I’d really like to visit. I’m sort of getting Merida vibes from your pictures.

You haven’t been? Why didn’t you go during your 2020 visit to Guatemala?

I was remote before the pandemic, so I was working from the road, and the Centric was my office. I was too busy during the day to make it out of the city. Looking to go back soon, though.

Just out of curiosity, do people really care about your coffee posts? I’m not knocking them. I’m just genuinely curious if you think people like them. Do they get much traffic?

I do. While I’m much less bougie than Mr. Matt, I like these posts cuz I love going to coffee shops when I’m traveling and he has good taste in coffee.

They actually do and perform well over time. But they are also some of my favorite posts to write and I would write them even if I was the only person who ever read them.

I for one definitely enjoy reading your coffee and out and about a city posts. I usually save all the places you recommend into my Google maps for handy reference if/when I visit. 🙂

Next time you’re in Antigua, look up Spokes Coffee. I know the owner there. He uses his business to help children and young adults build their lives.

Agreed! My greatest problem with coffee is there is a limit to how much I can drink. 2 a day is my max unfortunately 🙁

Matt, If you are back to Antigua again, try the Filadelfia coffee plantation. It’s just outside of town, but it’s incredible. You can tour the coffee plantation, there’s a zip-line course that is fantastic, a monster truck ride up the mountains, horseback riding, etc, etc…lots to do there, plus a really nice restaurant and shop where you can get the coffee of your choice…all really good.

Did you eat anything in the coffee shops? It looks like they had cake but the food was pretty sparse.
