A Bulgarian friend in Los Angeles recommended I visit her favorite coffee shop while in Sofia and I am thrilled I did…the coffee was excellent.
Great Coffee In Sofia, Bulgaria
Sofia has a rich coffee culture that has flourished in the post-communist era. All around town you can find cafés, making the decision of where to enjoy coffee all the more difficult. Thankfully, I had some help from my friend in LA, who told me that I would not regret going to Coffee Syndicate while in Sofia.
Coffee Syndicate

Located on the “yellow brick road” leading to Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Coffee Syndicate is centrally located and was hopping when I visited at 5:00 PM.
Inside, I examined the menu and quickly settled on a hot flat white. I had been out walking and it was a cold day…perfect for a late afternoon coffee.
The staff were quite kind and spoke English. Pastries were also available, but I passed on them. Credit cards were accepted.
Not only did the coffee taste great, but it also had a nicely-formed swan latte art, which is often the way I can distinguish a good coffee shop from a mediocre one.
I would have returned, but the Hyatt Regency Sofia also had excellent coffee…another vote for a great coffee on the other side of the cathedral.
@Matthew, I have tried over the years to enjoy coffee and I have always failed.
Which brings me to my question, did you like coffee your entire life or did you find coffee later in life?
I go into coffee shops and always wonder about the folks in there, how they developed their taste for coffee.
Anyway, I enjoy reading your articles about various coffee shops that you visit.
I did not drink coffee until I was 25 years old…I got through undergrad and law school without it. I was an occasional tea drinker, but that was about it. My wife, meanwhile, was a heavy coffee drinker and a bad influence on me. 😉
Last May, we popped into Coffee Syndicate before metro to airport (the central underground with archeological remnants itself was also super neat). Dabov had great coffee but higher price point. Our favorite coffee spot was Chucky’s. It was a cozier less hipster feel than Syndicate. The downside is that when we tried to go back again it was packed.
How can you pass on the perfect companion for that cup of coffee? баница
Absolutely correct. That would have been the “pastry” to try. Nothing against the Hyatt Regency Sofia, which is one of the best hotels in the city, but there are quite a few really good coffee joints and pastry shops in the city. I’ll throw in a plug for Ibeco near Slaveykov Square
