A mysterious fire broke out in the SkyTeam lounge at Istanbul Airport, causing extreme damage inside and outside the lounge. The lounge will be closed for an indefinite period.
Fires Shutters SkyTeam Lounge In Istanbul
Video shows flames pouring out the beautiful exterior facade of the lounge (I snapped the picture above just a few months ago), with firefighters watching as it burns.
The fact that there are fighters and even airport staff rather calmly walking around outside the flames suggests that the fire was contained, but then allowed to burn out.
Istanbul Airport has a team of dedicated firefighters focused on the passenger terminal, but according to HavaSosyalMedya they worked with the apron – tarmac fire crews to eventually extinguish the fire.
The lounge is closed “temporarily” according to SkyTeam:
SkyTeam’s Istanbul Lounge is temporarily closed while we carry out essential repair work caused by recent fire damage. We look forward to welcoming customers back soon.
But I would not expect it to open anytime soon…from what I can gather the damage inside was not only extensive, but total.
Eligible SkyTeam customers flying in a premium cabin from Istanbul may enjoy access to the IGA Lounge while the SkyTeam Lounge is rebuilt.
Does anyone know what happened?
Great. The IGA lounge is already overcrowded.
Delta is so PREMIUM and so HOT. Their planes are sleek. Their service is the best in the world. Their lounges are FIRE!
Were there any video cameras inside this 4 years old lounge? The green leatherette covered seats provided plenty of fuel for the arsonist.
Serves Turkey right. Siding with terrorists who murder innocent babies…
Hope their country follows this as well…
Serves the Turks right, radical islamists they are.
Turkey is just as bad as the Taliban, they just just know when to use their smiley face to get what they want.
How can Moe’s comment be allowed? That’s some hate speech! This site is becoming less and less civilized.
Oh No! How will the airline bloggers survive? Lucky is probably having a good cry over this.
Turkish Airlines pissed about SAS joining Skyteam
I’d assume any modern building like this would have had sprinklers… since this doesn’t seem to have worked, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of arson.
