The historic city of Ulm, Germany, founded in 850 AD and a former free imperial city, offers rich history, a cathedral with the tallest steeple in the world, and also some exquisite coffee…in a movie theatre.
Best Coffee In Ulm, Germany
It was a cold, rainy summer day in Ulm, the perfect day to curl up by the fire and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. I found a place called Cinema Café Bar and we walked to it from the city center, arriving rather wet and cold.

But inside it was warm and cozy, as we sat down at a small table. Looking around, the name of the coffee shop became clear. We really were in a movie theatre lobby. The owner, a gregarious Italian man, made small talk with us while he prepared the coffee. As an Ausländer (foreigner) himself, we enjoyed a conversation on what it was like to marry a German and we shared a laugh when he asked Heidi, my wife, if she’d rather be in cold rainy Ulm or sunny Los Angeles and she said Ulm any day of the week and twice on Sunday! (Heidi misses Germany)
Not only the conversation good, but the coffee was good too. In fact, my cappuccino was so good I had a second. We also ordered a croissant, which my son Augustine devoured such that we ordered a second one just so my wife and I could have a taste.
Heidi prefers Americanos with cream over lattes or cappuccinos and also thought the coffee was great (often, we don’t see eye-to-eye on coffee).
Warning – cash only. Ah Germany…
CONCLUSION
We greatly enjoyed our coffee here. Not only did the hot drink warm our hearts, but so did the great conversation and deep laughs we shared with the owner. Don’t neglect to stop here if your travels ever take you through Ulm.
