Augustine and I had a leisurely Sunday stroll through Deshaies, Guadeloupe with time spent on the beach and walking around the sleepy town of about 4,000 people.
A Lovely Stroll Through Deshaies, Guadeloupe
Christopher Columbus arrived in Deshaies on November 4, 1493. Over the next three centuries, the area was a frequent haven for pirates…it is thought that gold treasure may still be hidden on the island or under the bay. In September 1803, British and French naval vessels exchanged fire outside of Deshaies in a battle for control over the area. Today, it remains a French Overseas Department (so technically not a new country for us).
We took a tender over and spent a couple of hours walking around Deshaies. It was Sunday and despite two large boats depositing guests in port, it was quiet and not at all crowded.
Augustine wanted to play on the beach and we spent about an hour on the beach (with me seeking refuge in the shade) before meandering through town.
I sought out a specialty coffee shop, but the only place open was a bakery and despite the latte art advertising, there were only two automatic machines (self-serve).
We walked up to the Roman Catholic Church at the top of the hill, which was open but empty.
There were more chickens than people roaming about!
I had thought we could walk through Jardin Botanique de Deshaies (botanical gardens), but it was very hot out and Augustine wanted to go back to the ship…so we cut our stay short.
I feel like we probably missed out by not seeing much and visiting on a Sunday, but we did enjoy our brief time and Augustine loved the beach, which was not available on our cruise ship.
Have you been to Deshaies? What did you like?
Does not appear to be as good as a high-quality Hawaii beach .
Food prices seemed reasonable. I’d be down for a 25€ entrecote in the Caribbean.
You could have walked Augustine on how to solve a “Death in Paradise” episode.
Yup, I don’t know how you managed to write an entire article on Deshaies without mentioning DIP. It’s sensationally popular with 12 seasons done already.
Never heard of it.
I have now! 😉
Was that a cash handler machine for customers at the cafe? (Of course I assume you paid with card). I’ve seen these cash counter registers at some Japanese supermarkets but they are controlled by the cashier, not the customer.

Thank you.
The Roman Catholic Church is the police station on Death in Paradise. The newest episodes should be filming there in Deshaies soon.
One of the things on my bucket list is to watch the filming there.
Fantastic show
So you did not take the Death In Paradise tour!! Love that show that is filmed there AKA Saint Marie!! Also Doc Martin
filmed in ?Wales AKA Portwein has quite a following and was on many seasons just it just ended.
I really had no idea…
Thank you for sharing the wonderful photos. My first thought was Death In Paradise. I love that show! Now I am going to have to look into going to Guadalupe!
Matthew, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but I think both of you are overdue for a haircut 🙂
