Global Airlines Defies Some Critics, Justifies Others

Kyle Stewart Posted onMay 18, 2025May 18, 2025 5 Comments

Most critics thought Global Airlines would never get off the ground, but this week it proved most of the critics wrong – but not all.

In August 2023, I wrote about Global Airlines’ ambitious plan to break into the London-New York market using a fleet of Airbus A380s. At the time, the idea seemed more like a bold dream than a feasible venture. Fast forward to May 15, 2025, and Global Airlines has completed its inaugural transatlantic flight from Glasgow to New York JFK, marking a significant milestone for the startup.

A Bold Vision With Lofty Promises

Global Airlines, founded by James Asquith, set out to redefine luxury air travel by reviving the grandeur of the “Golden Age of Travel.” The airline’s vision included offering lavish experiences such as champagne and caviar service, even in economy class, and introducing innovative cabin classes like the proposed “Gamer class.” However, many of these promises remain unfulfilled. The inaugural flight operated with the original three-class configuration from the aircraft’s previous owner, China Southern, and lacked the advertised luxury amenities.

Operational Hurdles And Industry Skepticism

Despite the successful launch, Global Airlines faces significant challenges. The airline currently lacks a UK operating certificate and license, relying on Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly to operate its flights. This arrangement raises questions about the airline’s long-term viability and ability to scale operations.

Moreover, the decision to operate an all-A380 fleet is unconventional, given that many airlines have retired the aircraft due to high operating costs and difficulty filling seats. Global Airlines owns two A380s, with only one currently operational, and plans for regular service remain uncertain.

At the time of writing, the website was also down and multiple pages went to 404 errors.

The Path Forward: Potential and Pitfalls

While the inaugural flight is a noteworthy achievement, Global Airlines must address several critical issues to establish itself as a viable transatlantic carrier. Securing a UK operating certificate is paramount, as is developing a sustainable business model that justifies the use of A380s. The airline’s ability to deliver on its luxury promises will also be crucial in differentiating itself in a competitive market.

The airline could also pivot from the luxury and custom service initiatives to a more egalitarian approach offering affordable trans-Atlantic service. However, many have attempted that space and struggled or exited the model entirely.

Global Airlines has taken a significant first step by launching its inaugural flight. However, the journey ahead is fraught with challenges that will test the airline’s resilience and adaptability. Only time will tell if Global Airlines can transform its ambitious vision into a sustainable reality.

Certainly something strange going on. Not sure this flight proves anything other than a huge waste of cash.

I’m not sure that opening up a new service to Trumpton using an A380 is a wise move at the moment when Europeans are choosing not to travel there. We’ll see how long it lasts.
