My Favorite Hyatt in California

I’m just back from a relaxing long weekend at the Hyatt Carmel Highlands, my favorite Hyatt in the state of California.

To be fair, I have not stayed at every Hyatt property (yet) in CA, but I’ve been to all of the finer ones so let me explain why I like this one best.

First, the views are breathtaking. Rather than a standard ocean view with sand and water, this hotel has an amazing combination of natural beauty, with steep rock cliffs, beautiful blue waters, and green trees.

a pool next to buildings and trees

The view from California Market at Pacific’s Edge, the hotel restaurant, is even more amazing. It’s a beautiful way to start your day and the breakfast is excellent too.

a bowl of berries on a wood slab

a plate of food with a fork and knife

Brunch is served on weekends and my wife claimed the Cioppino was the best she has ever had. Plus, the Globalist amenities generous. My breakfast bill ran $120 each day and the whole amount, including 20% gratuity, was removed from my folio. The resort fee was also waived. This is on example of why I am determined to re-qualify for Globalist (I have about a month for seven more nights…).

The hotel is also a Hyatt Residence Club (time share property) and so the ratio of suites to guest rooms is great: 11 suites out of 48 guest rooms. After missing out on an upgrade last time, I took no chances and applied a Globalist confirmed suite upgrade this time.

The “townhouse” suite is two-story and includes a full-kitchen, two full bathrooms, a fireplace, and whirlpool bathtub downstairs.

a living room with a kitchen and dining area

a kitchen with a black refrigerator and a black stove

a living room with a fireplace and a couch

a fireplace with fire in it

a bed with a bathtub in a room

a tv on a wall

a room with a bathtub and a bed

a bathroom with a large tub and sink

CONCLUSION

This is a hotel worth checking out. Keep an eye out for email offers from Hyatt as well. Sometimes, if you are willing to endure a timeshare talk you can score a very cheap room rate. I’ve already booked my next stay!

Looks awesome. Going Cali this summer. How many time share presentations can you do in a year, 2, 3, etc?

Good question. I would assume just one, but maybe you do one under your name and the other under your spouse or SO’s name?

I took my wife and 1-year old son there for some R&R 5 years ago, and we found the property to be really dated and the rooms drab and run-down. Has there been a recent renovation?

Glad you enjoyed your stay. We spend a week here each July and have no plans of changing our habit as this is one of the most romantic and beautiful settings in the USA. With Big Sur, Pebble Beach, Point Lobos, and the wineries in Carmel Valley nearby, we never tire of things to do and enjoy. Your pictures show that you stayed in a time share room. The hotel rooms are not as nice yet fine for a short stay. Its rustic charm will not suit everyone’s tastes and that is why we like it. We laugh at negative reviews hoping they keep the pretentious and over-entitled types far away.

The view doesn’t makeup for the outdated and drab rooms. Major upgrade needed at Carmel and Monterey properties.

I actually like the rooms. Not incredible, but clean and comfortable. Don’t need minimalist at this hotel…nothing that really need replacement.

I’m just a little confused. How did you get the free globalist breakfast benefit at the hotel? Isn’t breakfast not complimentary for globalist members at residence clubs? Is the hotel good about complimentary space available upgrades to suites at check-in? Please explain.

Charles, I bleieve this hotel is actaully two properties in one. A Residence Club but also the Highlands Inn, a full-fledged Hyatt hotel. THat would explain the comp breakfast and upgrdes. But whenever I go, I always apply a suite upgrade. No risking taking the chance after getting burned twice before.
