Hyatt has announced its annual update to the Gold Passport award chart and thankfully changes are limited for 2015–here is what you need to know:
- 70 Hyatt properties are changing categories
- 22 hotels are moving up a category
- 48 hotels are moving down a category
- The new rates apply to all bookings made after 22 January 2015
- For the 48 hotels that moved to a lower category, previously booked reservations for stays after 21 January 2015 will receive a refund in points to reflect the new lower rates
- No blackout dates continue – if there is a standard room available, you can use your points to get it
You can review the chart below, but I will point out a few noteworthy changes at Hyatt’s more aspirational properties:
- Park Hyatt Maldvies moves from Category 6 to Category 7, which is a big jump for both points only and cash + points rooms
- Park Hyatt Seoul moves from a Category 4 to Category 5, which was a steal for such a superb property, to a Category 5. Read my review of the property.
- Park Hyatt Washington moves from a Category 6 to Category 5. Read my review of the property while the Grand Hyatt Washington, not at all one of my favorite Hyatts, moves from Category 5 to Category 4.
- Hyatt Regency Nice (Palais de la Mediterranee), which is a great property when visiting Nice or Monaco, is moving from Category 5 to Category 6.
- Visiting the three Park Hyatt properties in India is on my travel list for 2015 and Park Hyatt Chennai is moving from a Category 3 to a Category 2 property, costing only 4,500 Gold Passport points and $55/night.

These changes are not bad at all, through I will book the Park Hyatt Maldives now…
A word of caution if you’re considering the Park Hyatt Chennai when you do your India trip – it is a very nice hotel, but not really close to anything, except for the airport and the city’s growing high tech center. You can make it to the airport in 10 minutes and the tech city in 10-20, but getting to the city center or Marina Beach can take better than an hour, sometimes close to two, if you time it wrong or if the weather is bad. The Chennai Metro will help tremendously – there will be a station in the immediate vicinity of the Hyatt – but currently it doesn’t look like it’ll open all the way downtown until December 2015.
I think Matthew is on a quest to get to most, if not all Park Hyatts.
I was in Chennai earlier this year, and while I was very tempted to stay at the Park Hyatt, even at the very cheap rates compared to most any other PH elsewhere, I couldn’t really justify the cost on my business trip compared with everything else around the area. I stayed at the ITC Grand Chola which was nearby and quite an amazing property in its own right. Agreed on location; it was not too bad for where I was working, and easy to the airport.
This reminds me of how far behind I am on my trip reports…
Hi MeanMeosh – thanks for your comments! Indeed, Brad is correct – it is my goal to sample every Park Hyatt in the world and write about it here.
Ah, well in that case, have fun! Before you head off to Chennai, let me know, and I can suggest a couple of places worth seeing if you have a little time to look around. Just don’t go to India between about mid-March and mid-June, unless you fancy roasting to a crisp in the heat…
@MeanMeosh: Definitely! Trip will hopefully be in January.
