In the Heart of the Balkans

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 8, 2012December 9, 2016 5 Comments

I am writing this in a very Soviet-style hotel room in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. Yes, I am deep into the Balkans now.

The last several days have been quite picturesque–Dubrovnik and Budva were spectacular. Belgrade and Sarajevo weren’t bad either. Podgorica…interesting. Next stop Tirana, Albania. Then, Kosovo, Macedonia and finally Greece.

Why these places? The Balkans were the only part of Europe I had never explored–nor had my brother. Depsite the summer heat–over 100ºF today–I have found travel through this region fascinating and thus far, highly recommend if for no other reason than because it is different than any of the other 90+ counties I have visited.

I really hope you are exploring this part of the world by train, not plane. I did Hungary,Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia in the winter of 2007. Honestly freezing cold but an amazing region of the world! Still the cheap side of Europe!

Awesome trip : ) We’ve been riding on Motorcycle through Montenegro… the scenery was changing from scary young guys in cars to beautiful mountains and awesome meals! (we loved all the meat and potatoes after riding in Italy for few weeks ; ) )

I flew LH F to ZAG just a few months ago, and visited Rijeka too. I agree, definitely a unique region, one I plan to visit again, and hope to spend more time in!
