My Loutish Seatmate Should Have His Social Credit Score Docked…

I’m live-blogging my SAS EuroBonus SkyTeam Million Mile challenge this week. Click here for background and route information.

How can someone be so oblivious or indifferent to the fact that his mobile phone is disturbing everyone onboard the aircraft seated around him when not using headphones? Yet that was our loutish seatmate on Xiamen Airlines. The Chinese government should dock his social credit score!

Our Loud And Loutish Seatmate On Xiamen Airlines…

Augustine and I boarded our Xiamen Airlines flight first, but shortly after a Chinese man boarded and sat across the aisle from us. He proceeded to doom scroll through his social media, playing videos very loudly, such that the entire business class cabin was disturbed.

This continued for about 10 minutes, sadly with no flight attendant intervention (even though both male and female cabin crew members walked by several times).

Thankfully, he got bored and decided to go to sleep, even before we took off.

I wonder if he knew and did not care that he was disturbing others or simply totally oblivious to it?

Finally, I do know there is not a single “social credit system” in China, particularly one run by the CCP. Rather one’s “social credit score” is more an umbrella term for what we may think of as credit scores here in the West (that’s simplistic, but you get the point). So no, I’m not trying to imply that this man should be placed in the Xinjiang “re-education” camp for using his phone without headphones.

But that does not make him any less rude or obnoxious for failing to consider those passengers around him.

Sitting in the lounge in Male for Cheval Blanc Randhelli with my wife and kids waiting for the sea plane. In walks one Chinese couple and the guy immediately puts his phone on speaker and has an obnoxiously loud conversation. 5 minutes later another Chinese couple walk in and the man belches loudly with his mouth open twice.

Can’t teach class. Thankfully Cheval Blanc is wonderful and we haven’t seen those louts again.

@Matthew … Lucky you didn’t confront him … they are quite defensive and accusatory when confronted . Not worth the risk of being brought before the China police .

Sentence him to a weekend with Aaron. He will come back a little more appreciative of others spaces. Along with a sore a## and a sticky mouth.

Hey Aaron, I was about to delete his comment and saw you had already responded. Would you prefer I just delete the comments? This is just bullying against you – it’s getting very old.

Bullying against an anonymous individual who may or may not be gay? Bullying against an anonymous individual who bully’s and degrades conservatives at every chance?

It’s your site to do as you please and I do cross the line at times but when taken in totality, “Aaron” gives it as much as he takes it….literally and figuratively.

          • Matthew Klint
            December 3, 2024 at 9:18 am

No Dave, in almost all cases he responds…you instigate.

And that makes me wonder whether you are the troll here. I see you can post reasonable and serious things, so I really don’t undersatand this contast fixation on Aaron and all things gay. And whether “Aaron” is his real name or not, he’s posted here for years and is a person. It gets old.

You may not intend it, but many here (myself included) think you are a very repressed and closseted gay man – I’m not sure what else would explain the daily fixation on the subject matter you choose to dwell on.

            December 3, 2024 at 9:42 am

So does that make Aaron a closeted Republican?

As I have explained before, I’m a kid at heart that part of me never grew up. And I still believe gays are not normal and are people to be made fun of just like we did growing up when our parents warned us about them. And we called each other the F word and homo as insults. The world changed, I didn’t.

Add in the guy attacks Republicans and conservatives constantly and that makes him someone I enjoy F’ing with. And I say that with a 100% track record of heterosexuality, even with your intentional dig at me. Not everyone that makes fun of someone or something wants to actually he them. That’s just silly and you know it.

And since Aaron has accused Chi and I being the same person can you clear that up for him through whatever methods you use.

“”Aaron” gives it as much as he takes it….literally and figuratively.”

Ok then, “Dave”. You seem a bit way too obsessed with what gay people do, and not in a “I hate them kind of way”.

“So does that make Aaron a closeted Republican?”

Nah. I’m not as obsessed with calling them out as much as you are an admitted homophobe.

            “The world changed, I didn’t.”

I believe the dinosaurs said the same thing too at some point.

“Add in the guy attacks Republicans and conservatives”

Calling people out for their hate – whether it be racism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, etc – is neither attacking nor being a bully, iy’s just calling them out for their hateful views.

“And since Aaron has accused Chi and I being the same person can you clear that up for him through whatever methods you use.”

You guys may not be the same person literally, but you sure are figuratively.

If we’re being honest, Matthew, this “Dave Edwards” character spews bigoted commentary towards pretty much everybody and anything (though he especially targets Asians and Indians), not just gays. I thought his act might be like a Tony Hinchcliffe-style insult comic, but I’m increasingly convinced he’s the new “Debit”. (And no, Dave, this isn’t like making Polish jokes or throwing around that other F word in the day. I grew up in a household where my dad was notorious for his inappropriate, admittedly funny, humor. Your shtick goes way beyond that.)

I think Shakespeare said it best -Thou doth protest too much Dave Edwards & Chi Hsuan. Your obsession with homosexuality is a projection of your own insecurity with your own sexuality. Every adult sees and understands that, despite your protests otherwise.

And you fit right into the Republican party that chooses to ignore the facts and reality, and tries to create their own. Except we all know that cannot continue forever, and will face a day of reckoning.

            December 3, 2024 at 7:04 pm

@Michael – They’re just trying to compensate for their inner desires. My wife told me about one time when she attended a church where the preacher said that we must all fight to avoid the temptation of homosexuality. When I heard this I was stunned. Temptation? The only reason I would worry about it let alone fixate would be if I was gay. Since I’m not I don’t see the reason to demonize others to mirror my inner struggle to fit into what I would see as societal norms. The bro squad duo apparently aren’t very comfortable in their sexual identity and hope that lashing out will hide their inner desires. Ironically they’d be a lot happier if they just came out and lived a fulfilling life but that’s not the route they’re choosing for now.

While it is true that the passenger was inconsiderate for 10 minutes, it is cruel to use a minimally related term to smear him. What if he wrote a blog slamming Matthew for abusing his boy by endless flying without seeing many cities, getting kicked off a United flight for taking photos and making terrorist threats, and trying to get a free lunch then advocating that Matthew be put on a no fly list, his Hyatt membership cancelled, and his e visas revolked? What happened to the Biblical verse about not judging others?

Instead, a flight review, commenting on the experience would be more fitting of the dine LALF blog. Disclaimer: no support is intended for the ccp or Communist controlled sections of China.

Korea, Japan, and China seem to have similar cultures on the surface level, but if you dive into them, they all are pretty different. In Korea and Japan, people are mindful about what they do in public as society there look down on actions that disturb the public. However, in China, people seem to be more carefree.

It’s China. You always see crazy stuff there. He must have been from the countryside. I’ve never been outside of tier 1 cities before. One of my domestic flights or short haul Chinese flights from PVG to HKG had a crazy passenger in first class who would switch seats with their family every 20 minutes the entire 3 hour flight.

I was thankful the guy went to sleep during the flight (yes, he snored loudly) and then when he was awakened for breakfast he did not turn his phone back on loudly.

If social credit scores were docked for watching videos on your phone without headphones, not a single person in Miami would be able to get approved for a Chinese visa.
