New Lufthansa Buy-On-Board Menu Looks Köstlich

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 26, 2021November 14, 2023 5 Comments

Köstlich is the German word for delicious, and at least based upon the pictures, the new Lufthansa buy-on-board menu looks quite tasty. The food that is, not the menu itself.

Lufthansa Buy-On-Board Menu Revealed

Based upon “feedback from our customers” and to “meet the expectations of our guests” (yeah right…) Lufthansa is eliminating complimentary snacks and meals on short- and medium-haul flights and will instead offer food for purchase. Because who wanted free food and drinks you could pay for it, right?

Key details about the new Lufthansa buy-on-board service:

  • The new program will apply across the Lufthansa Group, including Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines.
  • The new service is expected to begin “in the course of the summer timetable 2021” which means as soon as March.
  • Prices will run from €2-12 and menus will be refreshed every quarter.
  • Soft drinks and hot beverages will cost €3 each.
  • Pre-orders are not available: instead, there will be a limited selection loaded onto each flight.
  • Food and beverages will still be free on long haul flights
  • The new program will not be available on flights less than 60 minutes
  • A water bottle and chocolate will still be offered on a complimentary basis on all flights
  • Business class passengers will continue to receive complimentary meals.

Lufthansa has now revealed that it will partner with dean&david and Dallmayr for the new onboard offerings. Dean&david is “a young gastronomy company from Munich that represents freshness, quality and a sense of responsibility – for healthy food, high-quality ingredients and sustainable nutrition as well as environmentally friendly packaging.”

Initial menu items will include:

  • Birchermuesli
  • salmon avocado bowl
  • falafel tahini salad
  • crunchy chicken bowl
  • sweet chilli chicken sandwich

Lighter snacks like cake and vegetable crisps will also be available. Selections from Dallmayr will include “hot beverages, confectionery and patisserie specialties.” Of interest to me is that a special coffee codenamed “Dano” from Ethiopia will be available onboard. Organic tea and chocolate milk will also still be available. May I suggest fresh-pressed orange juice? I’d pay a premium for that…

CONCLUSION

I cannot celebrate the loss of Lufthansa’s tasty complimentary sandwiches and free beverage selection onboard. But I will give Lufthansa credit for introducing what appears to be a delicious menu of freshly-prepared items developed on the basis of feedback from customers.

While full service airlines like British Airways and the Lufthansa Group look more like budget carriers when charging for what traditionally has been free, at least the meal selection looks delicious. And don’t forget that SWISS and Austrian will features regional and national menu items from their own nations.

What are your thoughts on the new meals? Will you make it a point to eat before or try these new onboard dishes?

These options all look fine. That said, there was something really nice and satisfying about the FREE cold cut (usually salami or some other cured meat) sandwiches that they served and that I had countless times on flights out of Frankfurt or Munich to various European locales. I will miss them.

Yes! Those were wonderful. Hopefully they will still be available in the lounges.

Dean&David is, on the ground at least, very tasty. Hopefully that will translate into this menu.

I’ve had that little cake a few times when flying from Frankfurt / Munich to Krakow. I was always disappointed when they wouldn’t have it available. Would definitely purchase.
