As I was looking though some old pictures last night, I stumbled upon a Lufthansa First Class trip I took in 2009 that was eerily similar to the one I just took. Thus, I thought a comparison post might be fun so we can see what has changed…and what hasn’t…in Lufthansa First Class over the last decade.
In 2009 I took my Uncle Dale to Israel and Egypt and we flew first class, SWISS on the way out and Lufthansa on the return. It turns out I visited the exact same B-Gates first class lounge and flew the same aircraft type, an A340-600. So what a perfect opportunity for a comparison.
Let’s start with the lounge. Lufthansa subscribes to the old adage, “Leave well enough alone” because almost nothing has changed.

Heck, the same TV is still tuned into CNN!

As you can see, the only thing that has improved is my camera. The lounge is largely unchanged, a testament to its enduring quality. The only difference is cigars are no longer complimentary.
Now let’s move onboard.
Lufthansa A340-600 First Class: 2009 vs. 2019
I was not in the business of writing trip reports in the summer of 2009, so there are no cabin shots here. You’ll notice the biggest difference is old seats…oh how I remember those seats. The new seats are more comfortable and spacious, but the old ones were perfectly fine for sleeping. Bedding has also improved and wi-fi is now available.

Same glasses, same napkins, same bowls.

(I’ve learned, over the last decade, that it is not worthwhile to order any red meat on Lufthansa unless it is a cheeseburger…)

Even the berries…I’m such a creature of habit.

Most importantly, at least in my book, is that service remains superior. That has not slipped in the last 10 years.
Economy class hasn’t changed much either, though Lufthansa has moved away from its yellow brand color:
The Lufthansa A340 still has the cool downstairs lavatories in economy class:
CONCLUSION
Well over a decade after I began flying Lufthansa First Class, it remains a product I always look forward to flying. Some things have changed, others have not, but Lufthansa First Class remains an exceptional and superior first class product.
The downstairs toilet is so cool. Must be nice to be able to use your legs a little more than just walking a few rows forward or backward.
There’s something to be said for consistency. Pretty remarkable they’ve managed to keep the product largely the same for 10 years.
BTW, what LH did to that beef on your 2009 flight is a crime against humanity…
That was reindeer, if I recall, but still horribly overcooked.
Fun article & useful as I have been toying to try a new airline. But I must say the “elk beef” made me giggle too.
What a fun post. I don’t fly Lufthansa First nearly as much as you, but I’ve always had a good experience. I also remember those old seats, and while it is more difficult and more expensive today, it is still well worth it.
Thanks for your comment Brad!
I only know Lufthansa premium economy and have been perfectly satisfied with my flight to Frankfurt from Houston last year. I have never been more comfortable or had better food on an airplane. I would never consider any other airline, and I am going back again this Year. Maybe I am too easy to please, but caviar, a rose and PJ’s doesn’t justify the $5000 airfare for me. Lufthansa service is the best, regardless of class.
I’ll be flying international first class for the first time ever this year (ANA). I wonder how much first class will change in the next ten years?
This is remarkable. I really appreciate the level of quality that Lufthansa invests in their product such that nothing really has to change for them to remain a top airline.
You mention that you’ve learned not to order red meat on Lufthansa…but what about the cheeseburger you proclaimed as being amazing? That’s red meat, right?
lol, touché!
I should have said any main course item, not snack.
That burger was a snack? Yikes, you must have a bottomless stomach. Judging by its looks and your testimony I’d rather have that than any main I’ve ever had on a plane.
The thing about hamburgers is they taste perfectly fine well-done. Call it a snack or second lunch or pre-arrival meal. It was a 12-hour flight and I had gone 8 hours without eating. I was starved! 🙂
