Lufthansa will launch a new route between San Diego and Munich starting in March 2022, utilizing one of its latest widebody jets, the Airbus A350-900.

New A350 Munich – San Diego Service On Lufthansa

Lufthansa flew between Frankfurt and San Diego before the pandemic but the route was suspended in 2020. While that route will not return, Lufthansa has announced new service between San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Munich International Airport (MUC)

Lufthansa will utilize an Airbus A350-900 for the new service, featuring three cabins of service:

  • 48 seats in business class
  • 21 seats in premium economy
  • 224 seats in economy class

The service will launch on March 30, 2022 and operate three-times weekly (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday) according to the following schedule:

  • LH466 – Depart Munich 12:30pm, Arrive San Diego 3:30pm
  • LH467 – Depart San Diego 5:30pm, Arrive Munich 1:20pm+1

In May 2022 the route will expand to five times weekly.

Frank Naeve, Vice President of Sales for the Lufthansa Group in the Americas, noted:

“With a robust economy and thriving corporate landscape, San Diego is the perfect gateway for our new service to Munich, Europe’s leading hub, offering a growing number of connections within Germany, as well as to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond.”

Kimberly Becker, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority President and CEO, played up the ties between Germany, particularly Bavaria, and San Diego:

“San Diego has many economic ties to Germany, and the Munich region in particular, including the life sciences, car manufacturing, and technology industries that contribute to its interest. A nonstop flight from San Diego to Munich will support continued regional economic activity, bring tourists to our great city, and serve as a connection to Europe and beyond.”

CONCLUSION

It is exciting to see Lufthansa return to San Diego, one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. Choosing Munich over Frankfurt does not change the fact that San Diego residents will now have a one-stop option to many more cities around the world.

STL is also getting 3xweekly LH flights to FRA, albeit on the A330. Kind of a big deal for us.

Interesting, it’s just a pity Lufthansa offer a two star business class product which would put me off using them for the time being.

Munich is a far nicer and easier airport to change flights than Frankfurt.

Agreed, James—I have little interest in their old business cabins. When will they refit their fleet with a modern business class product?

It should be loaded into the system in the next week.

San Diego appears to be underserved internationally given its proximity to LAX. However, while there used to be dozens of connecting flights between the two airports, I believe today there are how many – 3? On regional jets? The drive to LAX can take hours. So I presume San Diego and south Riverside County travelers are mostly connecting in Dallas, Chicago, New York, etc. on European itineraries (except for the BA flight through LHR). It seems very strange to me that LH would substitute Munich for Frankfurt when it doesn’t seem to be cutting flight through Frankfurt in general. Still Munich has plenty of connections. I flew TLV-MUC-LAX several years ago.
