Security Breach

Marriott has detected a security breach of their SPG data that could affect up to 500 million guests according to a press release filed and a report from CNBC. Marriott was specific to state that it was SPG resources that were affected and not Marriott records. This comes on the heels of a story about technology trouble at the brand just yesterday from Scott McCarney reporting for the Wall Street Journal.

What Was Taken

Marriott has outlined what was taken and for the large majority of affected guests (337 million of the 500 million) it is essentially everything from a reservation, for some guests payment information was taken in encrypted form. Marriott has not yet determined if the encryption keys were also taken with the payment details.

Here is a list of the information lifted in the breach:

  • Name
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Passport number
  • Starwood Preferred Guest account information
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Other personal details

While Marriott will undoubtedly release more information to the public as and when they have it, for now, we can only speculate as to how bad the damage will be.

More details as they emerge…
