Many people travel the world to see art and perhaps no art museum is as famous as the Louvre in Paris. But one disgruntled young man dressed up as an old lady in a wheelchair and lipstick then “attacked” the Mona Lisa in an apparent protest over climate change.

The enigmatic Mona Lisa, painted sometime between 1503 and 1519 by Leonardo da Vinci, attracts millions of visitors per year. Visit the Louvre and you’ll find the Mona Lisa in a second floor gallery…always the most crowded gallery of the museum.
When my wife and I were there, we had to chuckle at the all the flash photography in the room as the poor museum docent yelled out over and over and over again for people not to use flash (the first time I visited the Louvre, in 2006, photography of the Mona Lisa was not permitted at all, though that did not stop people from doing so either…).
According to the Washington Post, a 36-year-old man disguised as an elderly woman in a wheelchair attempted to smear a cake-like substance on the Mona Lisa last Sunday. He jumped the barricade and tried to break the glass that encloses the painting, screaming “think of the Earth” before giving up and smearing cake all over the glass as museum security apprehended him.
As he was being escorted out, he called out (in French):
“Think of the Earth. There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. Artists tell you: Think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.”
The man was transferred to a police psychiatric unit and it is not clear where he is now, though Paris prosecutors said they are considering charges against the man.
The man wasn’t crazy to choose to sit in a wheelchair: disabled patrons are able to wheel right up to the painting while those without disabilities must remain behind a roped barrier.
This isn’t the first attack against Mona Lisa. In 1911, the painting was stolen (an inside job by an employee). In 1956 it was hit by both a rock and acid, leading it to being encased. The most recent attack was 13 years ago when a woman hurled a ceramic cup at the painting.
CONCLUSION
While the Mona Lisa is one of the best-guarded paintings in the world, it’s sobering to think that some of the artwork you see today on your travels might be gone tomorrow thanks to vandals. Hopefully that will make you appreciate the art in your journey even more. And to the vandal, I hope they send him a on six-month “mission” to clean up all the graffiti in the Paris. Think of the Earth….

The unabated increase in Human population has over exploited the land, sea, water, atmosphere, animals, energy, and food. The continuous increase in human population increases pressure on all of these essentials to our existence.
