Mother’s Day Reflection: A Year of Firsts

As Mother’s Day is here again, I reflect on a year that has brought more travels than normal with the matriarchs in our family.

More Travel With Mom(s)

This year I took two landmark trips, one with my mom and one with my mother-in-law. As we grow older, we have prioritized traveling with family to make the most of our time together. Both my mother and my mother-in-law are active and have found the time to see more of the world with us and we couldn’t be more grateful, not just for ourselves, but also for our children. I never took a trip with my grandparents, and I am so glad that this hobby and the opportunities that been afforded to us allow us to share this time together.

A Year of Firsts

My parents were able to join us on a cruise with Explora Journeys in February. This was particularly special not just because we all got to spend time together but also because when my parents travel, they so rarely travel in luxury. In fact, despite my father taking several trips overseas, he’s never flown business class. My mother was treated to business class on a short flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok courtesy of my brother’s points. To be able to share with them an elevated experience like we did on Explora was incredible.

My wife and I take every trip together with our kids (outside of work trips) and that has made it hard for us to find time together, just the two of us. My parents were so helpful and supportive, taking the kids for ice cream or for dinner so that my wife and I could enjoy some time together just the two of us.

Despite tough, hot days at Universal Studios, my mom was happy to join in with us at the theme parks too!

Traveling with my mother-in-law was also a new collection of firsts for her and for us. Despite several long-haul trips abroad, she too, had never flown business class until our trip to Europe. We were so excited to be there for that, show her around the lounges and just watch her truly enjoy something just for herself.

Her trip was mostly a heritage trip, visiting the Azores in Portugal where her father, a first-generation American, and his parents come from. To see the land, the sea, eat the food, and so many people that reminded her of family she’d met before was a wonderful thing to witness.

Despite visits to Italy in the past, she hadn’t yet been to Rome, a couple hours north of where her mother’s side originates, also first-generation Americans. Seeing the colosseum for the first time is breathtaking and we were there at her side.

In fact, we got to celebrate her birthday at Scarpetta at the Intercontinental Rome Ambasciatori Hotel (review to come) with our young family.

More To Come

What will the next year bring? It’s time to finally get my parents to the pointy end of the plane and let them see what they’ve been missing. But from there, who knows? Maybe smaller islands or an exploration of the Caribbean based from their homes in Florida. Perhaps we will try to cross off some bucket list items, my mother has long wanted to see Machu Pichu, why not now?

Conclusion

As we continue to explore the world, both places we’ve been and new places we’ve been we will be doing so more often with our mothers (and fathers) in tow. Because what good is seeing the world, if you can’t share it with the ones you love?

What do you think? Have you taken memorable trips with your mother?
