I love classical music, especially on airplanes. It helps me to fall asleep on redeye flights and relax at other times during the day. United Airlines, for example, recently transitioned from XM to Microsoft Zune audio and offers a nice compilation, about an hour and change in length, of popular classical tunes on all of its mainline flights. But American Airlines has just one-upped them in their recent deal with the New York Pops to bring two-hours concerts to many of their domestic and international flights.
Living in Germany and having traveled to 50 nations around the world, I can attest that American pop culture and particularly American music seems to reach all nations. As James Johnson, chief Executive of the Pops stated, “This relationship will allow us to reach an international audience…we hope we can be New York’s ambassadors to the world, with American’s support.”
Indeed. The New York Pops will soon reach a much larger audience and I think that is a great thing. I get sick of the quips, usually made by Europeans, that Americans are "so uncultured." The New York Pops heard on AA flights around the world should help to dismantle this misconception.
