Next Destination for Lufthansa A380: San Francisco

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 27, 2011 7 Comments

Right in the middle of our podcast tonight, Ben suddenly blurted out “Holy cow! Lufthansa just announced that SFO is getting the A380.” This was followed by furious typing then a quick quip, “Guys, they haven’t loaded in the new aircraft yet and there is first class availability. Book fast!”

With that, the podcast promptly concluded as all of us were far too absorbed over the thought of flying in the exclusive first class cabin of LH’s new A380s to discuss anything else.

I am pleased to report that my Thanksgiving trip home to California is now booked (though not ticketed–I ran into the 12-hour hold problem) and hopefully the 744s will soon turn into a 388s on the schedule.

If you’ve got the miles, book NOW. Lufthansa won’t drag their feet long on this–the aircarft type may be loaded as soon as tomorrow–and that means all first class seats will be zeroed out (in fact, I was surprised to even find seats on the 744 today).

As Fozz recently shared, first class is a quite a treat on LH’s A380s.

(big tip of the hat to Ben)

Thanks for the head’s up! I’m on the phone with the 1K Desk as I type. Good thing I can cancel with no penalty if I can’t go.

I’m booked & ticketed… didn’t have an agent following the 12-hour rule. She just said, “it’ll just take a moment for Lufthansa to come back confirmed”. Anyway, I’m thrilled and can’t wait!

Looks like the A380 will transition back the 744 during the winter months.

Here’s to hoping traffic is so strong the A380 stays on the route…

That’s what I heard. Any chance that UA will be able to change my ticket from December to May? Would LH release any A380 F availability?

@FriendlySkies: They haven’t so far for NRT or JFK. They still release quite a bit of space on the A340 and A330 aircraft with only eight seats in first class, so we may just have to wait for the newness of the product to wear off.
