Out goes Oscar Munoz, in comes…Oscar the Grouch? United Airlines has named Sesame Street yeoman Oscar the Grouch as its first Chief Trash Officer. No folks, I’m not joking…and neither is United.
Oscar The Grouch Now A Part Of United Airlines C-Suite
Yesterday, United teased us with this spot:
We’re looking to hire a Chief Trash Officer who sees the good in garbage because United is investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from things like waste. See what all this rubbish is about 3/2.
Ok. Let’s pause and check our watches. No, it is not April 1st. And no, this is not a joke.
But it caught your attention, didn’t it? And that’s the cleverness here.
Per United, SAF is an alternative to conventional jet fuel that, on a lifecycle basis, reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel compared to conventional jet fuel alone. With this campaign, United aims to educate consumers on its efforts to add more Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to its fleet.
SAF is currently made from used cooking oil and agricultural waste. In the future, United hopes that it can be made from other feedstocks including household trash or forest waste. To date, United has invested in the future production of over three billion gallons of SAF, more than any other airline.
Is this wokery run amok? After all, SAF is currently less than 0.1% of United’s overall fuel use. No, for two reasons. First, I think United sees the green (as in money) in going green and is right to sense that making consumers feel better about flying is good for the bottom line. Second, conservation should be embraced by both conservatives and liberals alike. We are stewards of this beautiful world and we should do our part, within reason, to preserve it for generations to come. This is a way for both sides can come together.
Developing SAF and investing in technology like carbon capture seems to me a far more realistic way of (slowly, but positively) addressing some of the negative impacts of climate change than trying to shame people not to fly or to reduce consumption (hint: it won’t happen).
That’s my view. United Chief Communications Officer Josh Earnest explains what United is trying to aim for in this odd campaign:
“Every airline burns jet fuel to run their business, but no airline will solve climate change on its own. So United has enlisted Oscar to help us educate the traveling public of all ages about SAF and rally them to the cause of fighting climate change. From banana peels to fryer grease, Oscar is uniquely qualified to help us explain why trash could be the treasure that fuels the jets of the future.”
The media influences culture and United’s derision to target a beloved kid’s character that parents (like me) also remember from when they were kids strikes me as a very good way to educate.
CONCLUSION
Progress is slow and SAF is hardly salvation when it comes to trying to mitigate the pernicious side effects of climate change. But here United is trying to burnish its green credentials and also help travelers, starting from a young age, understand that wisdom of seeking technological solutions to climate change. As United maintains it goal of reducing its emissions by 100% by 2050 without relying on carbon offsets, it hopes that SAF will be a big part of that equation.
Will UA implement SAF like Flying Blue where purchasing SAF counts for current and lifetime status? If they do, then it might make it more attractive to purchase SAF.
No matter how they package it:
No one cares what United does with their trash and there is no way to positing burning millions of gallons of jet fuel a month as ‘”eco friendly.”
This is just too cute!! Really amazing and loving!!
Fairy Tales coated with nostalgia. We were tricked as children into believing some ridiculous stuff. So an advertising genius said hey, they bought a load of lies once. Maybe it will work again. I am uncomfortable in a campaign like this that reeks of “future promises” Do the work then brag about it
I understand what you mean, but disagree to some extent. I think advertising future promises motivates them, and empowers those charged, to work towards keeping those promises. More so than not being able to brag/market about them until achieved, which makes such efforts less visible and may make them more prone to cuts.
Oscar was green when it wazn’t easy!
This sounds woke to me. Hopefully DeSantis bans wokenited from Florida and then shuts them down completely when he becomes president. After all, how can we be free if companies are allowed to do things tucker said I’m not supposed to like?
United’s social media is a mess right now. They responded to a comment of “grouch leads the way” with “100%”, lol. Dr. David Dao and the casserole dishes would agree. United also commented “Oscar will dial into the call from the trash can”.. to think people get paid for this kind of marketing. At least everyone can rest easy knowing Oscar is vaccinated.
https://twitter.com/oscarthegrouch/status/1456986225315745805
Perhaps Oscar can put the spotlight on the “trashy” premium meals they keep serving up.
How long before some woke loser finds something offensive with Oscar and Sesame Street, and calls for UA to take it down?
Wait a minute… “sustainable” fuel is woke, but being against Oscar the grouch is also woke. Oh no! If I was educated enough to know what a paradox was I would be worried! What is an anti-woke soldier such as myself supposed to do?!
All of the puppets & muppets went woke when they were used for the inoculation campaign. One thing is for sure, the AA and DL marketing teams won today. They did not pay their people to photoshop a grouch onto their livery. Winning.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CpSZj1JugCE/
But David said it was woke to be against sesame street. I need to send this to tucker so he can tell me which side I should hate. All this anti-wokeness can get so confusing. I just want to direct my rage in the right direction
Perhaps direct it at money launderer in chief (and horrible dancer) Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/UkmI1BHAr8I
This is another small but meaningful step for this industry, regardless of motivation. Even Lufthansa’s green fare is progress, in that it provides a convenient way for fliers to contribute. I think you are right – trying to change people’s consumption habits is a much more difficult proposition, short of an imminent and own-experience disaster.
LMAO @ “regardless of motivation”.
Let me guess, you also think a carbon tax is appropriate, too. Man, I really tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but your posts are more comical than anything else at this point.
Some of the comments on a Lufthansa article said it all:
1) Greenwashing
2) Carbon offsets are a scam. Nothing more
3) is this serious? It’s not even April Fool’s Day yet.
4) “This is part of Lufthansa Group’s goal of halving net CO2 emissions by 2030 (compared to 2019), and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.” And then what? No more climate change? Ha! Folks the climate is constantly changing. How vain must you be to think we can control it? And why is it we still have a crisis after decades of implementing these life saving changes? And when it doesn’t work we’re told we need to do more, by the very same people who’s ideas have failed. This is nothing more than a marketing ploy by Lufthansa aimed at ignorant people. If it works good on them. But it will do NOTHING for the environment.
5) It’s not just a marketing ploy unfortunately. It’s a step in preparation to introduce ‘Climate Credit Scores’ that give the governments totalitarian control just like the Social Credit Score in China does. Once every product and service you can buy does have an attributed ‘Climate Impact Score’, governments will start to come up with ‘Climate/CO2 budgets/ for everyone. Some credit cards in Scandinavia and the Netherlands are already trialing such features..
6) They likely spent a lifetime of carbon having meetings, flying people in to talk about greenwashing fares, zoom calls, and having staff spend carbon just coming up with these. It’s all a fool’s errand that is someplace between catering to a cult and a fairy tale.
7) If carbon offsets are important to you, buy the carbon offsets directly with the appropriate non profit organization(s) in your country to ensure every single dollar goes to the organization and you get to write off your own taxes.
8) I’ll start worrying about my “footprint” when flying when the .01% gives up flying private.
That’s to much reading. Just tell me which of those things are woke so I can know how outraged to be
Urban Dictionary literally has 82 (eighty two) pages of definitions of “woke”. I couldn’t decide which one was best, so here’s a bunch, as I know you enjoy reading:
: Umbrella term for individuals who are engrossed by social justice and thinks of themselves as saviors with a moral high ground, but remain willfully ignorant to the irrationality of their claims and the problems they create. These individuals give special treatment to certain minorities in hopes of ending racism and perpetuate mental illnesses as the norm.
: Woke is used more often to term someone as hypocritical and think they are the ‘enlightened’ despite the fact that they are extremely close-minded and are unable to accept other people’s criticism or different perspective. Especially considering the existence of echo chamber (media) that helped them to find other like-minded individuals, thus, further solidifying their ‘progressive’ opinion.
: An oxymoron term used to describe the many indoctrinated & radically left-wing people of today’s world who are obsessed with jumping on whatever mainstream bandwagon is necessary to feel included, though ironically being the most intolerant and hypocritical people on the planet.
: the word is associated with political correctness, cancel culture, and left leaning bias. It is politically correct to be woke, and if you are woke, you are politically correct. The words meaning is often described as being “enlightened”, but enlightenment means being well informed, and being woke is often not being well informed, but being biased, and being ill informed because facts are hard to find in current events because things can be taken out of context easily and media sources can be biased. The irony is the term should be used if correctly to describe those who are ‘awake’ to the modern world however these people are so closed minded they cannot think critically, and are actually ‘asleep.’
: When big companies like Disney and Marvel or Netflix insert politics usually relating to an individuals race, sexuality or gender into any form of entertainment in a non subtle often preachy tone in order to get more people to consume the entertainment in question or push a political agenda.
: From the running social zeitgeist, it would described it as modern hipsters referring to a person being described has been enlightened or having just discovered some politically Progressive ‘truth’ about society or the oppression and class status of marginalized people, and the obligation to treat them as extra-special/revered in society.
: Woke culture or a woke person thinks they are awake to social issues, when the reality of it is, they have been indoctrinated into thinking things that aren’t true. Essentially, they aren’t awake to anything at all. They just fall for propaganda thrown at them without question.
: A politically correct narrative that has Marxist principles at its roots and doesn’t tolerate open discourse.
I can’t read to good so I’m not sure about all them words, but I don’t know if I can trust anything called the “urban” dictionary. Maybe if it were called the rural dictionary, or the EIB dictionary I could trust it
Replied below by mistake but also… EIB? https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=EIB
Lol..you do make me laugh at times, seriously. At least someone makes us laugh. random but my favorite ‘Average Republican’ word is “irregardless”. I hope you’ll incorporate that one more. Happy to report Matthew and Kyle have never used that word: https://liveandletsfly.com/?s=irregardless
Irregardless, stay woke, yo 🙂
United and the rest pushing climate hard as the 2023 agenda: https://i.postimg.cc/nhJBK1Fd/IMG-5078.jpg
I don’t care about carbon credits or SAF or whatever green BS is the “in” thing when I’m flying. What I do care about is what fuel burns the best and creates the most thrust, which in turn creates a safer flight profile.
100%. Caught one lie, then two, then three, then read the data. Then realized they’ve been exaggerating & fear-mongering headlines for decades. They are brainwashing kids.
1970’s — The New Ice Age
1980’s — Acid Rain
1990’s — The Ozone!
2000’s — Global Warming
2010’s — Climate Change
That’s 40+ years of fear-mongering to siphon off billion$ from taxpayers while expanding gov power and advancing the left’s agenda. Weather Channel Founder and Brian Stelter:
Hi AJ, and welcome back. There are a couple things I wish to point out:
– Mr. Coleman, the founder of the Weather Channel, is not really a scientist. He has a B.A. degree in journalism.
He was a weather anchor for a TV station, which I think falls well short of being a scientist.
– “Global warming,” by which we mean increasing global average temperature, is data backed, and can’t really be dismissed as a conspiracy. https://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/
– What may legitimately be disputed is the cause of the global warming. Some scientists believe natural causes and natural cycles spanning millions of years are the primary cause, with human activity being a secondary one. However, I recall research papers showing that the amount of fossil fuels extracted and consumed since the industrial age, does correlate well to the increased CO2 level we’re detecting in the atmosphere.
Btw, acid rain and ozone issues you pointed out were real problems at that time. Thankfully, they were mitigated by new environmental laws. I was an engineering graduate student during the disappearing ozone (ozone hole over the Antarctic), and was working on alternative refrigerants (to replace the chlorofluorocarbons like R-12 and 22), and can assure you that continued use of those refrigerants containing chlorine (causing continued ozone depletion in the stratosphere and increased UVB exposure on the ground) would have caused serious and adverse health and ecological outcomes.
What if the modern day environmental movement is a scam for resources, profit, and control?
Spoiler alert: It is.
What if doomsday government officials and corporate oligarchs at the highest echelons were pushing fake climate solutions that are making the environment worse, and not better?
Spoiler alert: They are.

Thanks, Jake. If you’d like to respond to a much larger list of climate propaganda from the past few decades, please, have at it:
https://i.postimg.cc/4xCdLnbL/FZq-Vf-A9-XEAAd-QNw.jpg
Or please feel free to address weather modification by various countries. Stratospheric injections. Geoengineering. Chemtrails. Forest fires. Et al.
I am not so sure acid rain and ozone were massive problems at that time. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Mother nature > chlorofluorocarbons. Take rising seas levels–a supposedly massive imminent problem.. What’s interesting is that the majority of the elite continues to purchase waterfront real estate on remote islands and other places like Martha’s Vineyard as if there is no issue. They must have some good flood insurance.
Re: Coleman–I just checked Google and both Purdue and Forbes said that meteorologists are scientists, so idk. Forbes: “So yes, meteorologists are scientists….And very important ones too.” Purdue: “Atmospheric scientists, including meteorologists study weather, climate, and other aspects of the atmosphere.”
Regardless, Coleman makes an important point: Accepted doesn’t automatically mean its correct. At one point, “accepted science” said a lot things. See: COVID and COVID inoculations, 2020 to 2023+.
Overall, many actual scientists agree with Coleman that climate change–and all of the many names for it–is BS. Seeing that the carbon tax and overall control of humanity are just some of the communists goals, as previously explained, I am more than willing to bet that climate change is majorly exaggerated and being used for nefarious intent, like just about everything else.
When the evil World Economic Forum is pushing carbon taxes: “Addressing climate change through carbon taxes”, you know there’s an issue. I noticed you how didn’t address the carbon tax in your replies, or any of the other comments about Lufthansa.
Forgive me for not not being impressed by your engineering graduate degree, but as explained previously, education is infiltrated by marxists, so I am not surprised that marxist positions would be adopted. Furthermore, the fear-mongering has been around for decades, and my entire lifetime, so suffice it to say: we’re used to it:
– Time Magazine, 1973: The Big Freeze
– Time Magazine, 1979: The Cooling of America
– Time Magazine, 1992: Vanishing Ozone
– Associated Press, 1989: U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked
..[by the year 2000]
There’s countless other articles like those. Nevertheless, the truth is available for those who wish to find it:
– Popular Science, 2009: Bored With Personal Computers, Bill Gates Sets His Sights On Controlling the Weather
– Business Insider, 2016: China spent millions on a shady project to control the weather ahead of the Beijing Olympics — and dozens of other countries are doing it too
– NASA, 2018: Antarctica’s contribution to sea level rise was mitigated by snowfall
– NASA, 2019: Major Greenland Glacier Is Growing
– MIT Technology Review, 2021: Bill Gates: Rich nations should shift entirely to synthetic beef
– CBN News, 2020: The ‘Weaponization’ of Weather: Meteorologist Joe Bastardi Challenges the ‘Phony’ Climate War
– Mother Jones, 2020: Solar Panels Are Starting to Die. What Will We Do With the Megatons of Toxic Trash?
– New Hampshire Union Leader, 2020: OpEd: Global warming dishonesty is the real inconvenient truth
– CBS News, 2021: Paris court finds France guilty of failing to meet its own Paris climate accord commitments
– Washington Examiner, 2021: Massachusetts climate official proposes targeting regular people who heat their homes: ‘We have to break your will’:
A Massachusetts climate official said people who heat their homes and fuel their cars will need to have their “will” broken in order to combat emissions and climate change.
More inconvenient truths, and there’s tons more where that came from. I remember watching Al Gore in Inconvenient Truth thinking what a genius he was back then. I now know that he’s just a politician.
–“I know one thing that we found in our analysis is that 60% of our emissions come from … residential heating and passenger vehicles,” said David Ismay, Massachusetts, undersecretary for climate change, during a virtual meeting with the Vermont Climate Council. “Let me say that again: 60% of our emissions that need to be reduced come from you, the person on your street, the senior on fixed-income. Right now, there is no bad guy left, at least in Massachusetts, to point the finger at and turn the screws on and now break their will, so they stop emitting. That’s you. We have to break your will.”–
Good luck breaking our will 🙂
Furthermore, science says most of Earth is unexplored & unknown–glacier cycles, volcanos, oceans–most beyond human comprehension right now. Again, most of the ocean is unexplored–and most of Earth is ocean. Which means if you do the math, most of our planet is unexplored.
So the science is settled? No.
And the left has it all figured out? No.
Climate change is a monstrous lie. It’s a ploy for communism on a global scale.. yet another global wealth redistribution scam which punishes western success.
We have something called trees. Anyone can plant them. Trees don’t involve taxing the entire world, taxing Americans, laundering money & screaming alarmism about the world ending.
At this point, the left, the elite, and much of science and higher ed has almost zero credibility left. You can’t beat us (all), so may as well join us. I just can’t imagine how so many people want to be on the wrong side of history, but to each their own.
In the meantime, communist policies (and meaningless actions from United and Lufthansa) are a no from me.
Regarding Mr. Coleman, he is what the AMS calls a “broadcast meteorologist.” They are usually media related personalities, such as news weather anchors like himself. They are not trained as scientists who do research/scientific work in the field of meteorology (atmospheric science). As mentioned, he got his degree in journalism.
As for the other topics, it appears we have unbridgeable differences in our basic understanding about science and even reality, which makes an exchange of ideas impossible. I do admire your passion, and do wish you the best.
Got it. I did explain (actual) reality previously:
The power elites — George Soros, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and others (this list is growing) — are all billionaires and allies of the European, Russian and Chinese elites. These would like to have control over the entirety of the globe.
The question, then, is why? They are already rich and powerful.
In a nutshell, that’s just it — they seek dominion over the entire globe, and this would be the final power grab and control over billions of slaves.
Many of the elites have stated their goals very publicly and quite openly. Most of them believe this planet is overpopulated and humanity must be reduced.

“Carbon markets have become a top strategy for agriculture and climate, despite a history of fraud, failure to reduce emissions, and corporate greenwashing,” report co-author Jason Davidson, senior food and agriculture campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said in a statement.
“We do not have time or resources to waste on ineffective approaches to addressing the climate crisis, especially those that greenwash corporate pollution and risk increasing greenhouse gas emissions,” wrote Davidson.
–Rainforest Carbon Offsets Used by Major Corporations ‘Largely Worthless’: Analysis
“Companies are making false claims and then they’re convincing customers that they can fly guilt-free or buy carbon-neutral products when they aren’t in any way carbon-neutral,” one expert lamented.
Over 90% of the rainforest carbon offsets sold by the nonprofit organization that sets the world’s leading sustainability standard “are largely worthless and could make global heating worse,” an investigation published Wednesday by three media outlets confirmed.
For nine months, The Guardian, Die Zeit, and SourceMaterial analyzed scientific studies of Verra, “the world’s leading carbon standard” in a voluntary global offset market worth $2 billion annually and growing. Verra’s customers include major multinational corporations, and the analysis’ findings cast doubts over the carbon offset credits the companies buy in order to label their products as “carbon neutral” or assure customers that they can consume their products or services without worsening the climate emergency.
“The implications of this analysis are huge,” said Barbara Haya, head of the Carbon Trading Project at the University of California, Berkeley. “Companies are making false claims and then they’re convincing customers that they can fly guilt-free or buy carbon-neutral products when they aren’t in any way carbon-neutral.”
