Oops: Qantas Forces Entire Plane To Watch Adults-Only Film

a screen on the back of an airplane

I’m not sure what the flight crew was thinking, but passengers on a Qantas longhaul flight were forced to watch a film filled with explicit adults-only content after the in-flight-entertainment system malfunctioned. This should never have happened.

Qantas Screens Explicit Film Onboard With No Escape Possible

The incident took place on a Qantas flight from Sydney (SYD) to Tokyo Haneda (HND). As on passenger onboard shared:

So, I was on Qantas flight QF59 from Sydney to Haneda today, and the in-flight entertainment system was down. After a one-hour delay, the pilot decided to take off anyway, but the only option left was for the crew to play a movie on every screen – and it was impossible to pause, dim, or turn it off.

Here’s the kicker: the movie they played was extremely inappropriate. It featured graphic nudity and a lot of sexting – the kind where you could literally read the texts on screen without needing headphones.

It took almost an hour of this before they switched to a more kid-friendly movie, but it was super uncomfortable for everyone, especially with families and kids onboard. I’ve attached a few pics of the scenes (only from the sexting parts, no nudity).

How is this acceptable for a major airline? Has anyone else had something like this happen?

(there are some pictures there and they are so over the line for a movie screened for general audiences on an airplane)

The movie in question was R-rated Daddio, a 2o23 Hollywood film starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn.

I’m glad Qantas realized the error, but I cannot believe it took an hour to do so…didn’t anyone think to check the rating of a film before screening it on every single seat in a manner in which it could not even be dimed?

There’s nothing prudish about saying I don’t want my young children to see graphic violence or sex or nudity on an airplane. Frankly, I don’t want to see it either. I see those types of movies as unedifying in general and seek to avoid them, but there’s a mountain of difference between passengers watching an explicit R-rated film from their own seatback screens and making every passenger onboard captive to a film with gratuitous content. And yes, I will be the judge of what my own children watch.

Don’t tell me the kids could have just looked away. I’m old enough to remember the days of movies being screened on overhead monitors and asking a kid not to watch a screen is laughable.

So I hope Qatnas learned a lesson from this. I don’t blame the captain for taking off before the crew exceeded its maximum duty time, but better to leave the screens dark then to screen something like that.

Qantas has apologized:

“Qantas is now reviewing how the movie was selected. The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologise to customers for this experience.”

Good. Now make sure it does not happen again!

All “entertainment” is mentally Sick . All in violation of the Ten Commandments . JFK’s FCC chief , Newton Minnow , was correct in terming television ” A Vast Wasteland ” , and that was 60 years ago . I have fortunately never owned a vile television , and never will . Psychological poison , without anything redeeming . Consider “Rap” .

I wouldn’t go that far, but for whatever artistic value was in that film, it was totally over the line to screen it for everyone.

@Matthew … I agree films previously had artistic value , but the last one with artistic value was likely “The Pink Panther” in 1963 . For example , compare Charlie Chaplin’s Mutual Films with anything made after 1963 .

        Films with artistic value.
Just like that Woody Allen film, the plot about infidelity and marrying your own stepdaughter, not to mention numerous allegedly #MeToo stuff.
        Artistic value indeed.
        Wait, that’s IRL.

If there’s only one selection, the best is probably the moving map.

The second choice might be news.

Travel shows might be either the 2nd or 3rd choice.

Qantas picked the 4th choice possibly. It may have been better than a boring kid movie.

And how about no entertainment at all? Seriously, why do people need to watch something all the time? Just snooze on the flight, no need for a movie.

Not everyone wants to sleep or can’t sleep. Let those who enjoy watching movies/TVs show enjoy that.

Just wondering how many kids had questions that required some explanation in a most inappropriate place. I would have thrown a blanket over their heads.

Reminded me the joke about a father asking his preteen son to have a talk about sex. The son started by saying :” Sure, dad. What do you want explained?”

Remembering when I had my young son (6) in DC. At an atm, the group behind us wearing sexually explicit t shirts with drawings. My kid staring and asking questions that never should be addressed on Constitution Ave.

We have one poster here (I won’t name him) that always watches Deliverance on flights just for the love scenes.

This reminds me of seeing airport stores sell adult magazines years ago. Was someone really going to read that on a flight?

But Daddio received 89% in the Popcorn meter. Certainly, it must be a tastefully artistic exposition of sexual interactions between consenting adults.

How and why did it take an hour? With all the people complaining you’d think the FAs would have rebooted the system sooner.

Riight, Matthew but you watch White Lotus on the plane, I believe it was. Yeah, no kind of sex in that show AT ALL. I guess that is okay. Hey, I like the show, but dude, you have so many sets of standards.. you are a piece of work.

In a closed-door suite…quite a difference between forcing kids to watch it. Come on now…

I watched White Lotus because several friends specifically recommended it. And yes, I loved it…both seasons. But yes, some scenes were a bit much.

“After a one-hour delay, the pilot decided to take off anyway.”

I would have hoped he decided to take off anyway! One hour is already too long of a delay over an IFE issue. People have schedules to keep. No need for further delay over an inconsequential issue.
