Review: Lufthansa Senator Lounge Hamburg

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 16, 2017January 16, 2017 1 Comment

In Aesop’s Fables’ “The Tortoise and the Hare,” we learn that slow and steady wins the race. Sometimes I wonder if that will be Lufthansa.

Here’s what I mean — while other carriers raced to provide fully lie-flat beds in business class, Lufthansa held back, only completing its retrofit last year. While others (even United) are introducing swanky new lounges with enhanced amenities, Lufthansa has opted for the status quo.

I remember visiting the Lufthansa Senator Lounge in Hamburg on the way home from a business trip in 2011.

It is located in Terminal 2 of Hamburg Airport, near gate A19. Hours of operation are 5:30a to 9:15p. If you are traveling outside of the Schengen Zone, like on United’s Newark flight, the lounge is a 10 minute walk from your gate.

To access the lounge, you need to head upstairs, take a left, then take a right. You actually have to climb stairs. There is an elevator hidden somewhere, but it is not clearly marked or easily accessible.

Not surpassingly, the lounge has not changed at all. At all.

Same furniture. Similar food spread. Same patio and smoking room. And that just seems to be the way Lufthansa is.

I like this lounge. I liked being able to have a cup of coffee and bowl of scrambled eggs prior to my flight.

And maybe Lufthansa should just leave well enough alone. Perhaps serving goose every Christmas for the last half century is working. After all, Lufthansa is still around and probably would be profiting were it not for all the strikes.

I do respect that Lufthansa leaves well enough alone, like this lounge in Hamburg.

What did you expect to change? It has the “new” design already, the old blue & silver theme is gone. And pretzels are eternal.
