Review: Park Hyatt Hamburg (Update)

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 15, 2017January 15, 2017 1 Comment

It has been over three years since I last reviewed the Park Hyatt Hamburg but after a couple recent great stays there, I can keep this limited. My original review is still valid: the property has maintained it superior quality.

Park Hyatt Diamond Amenities

I’ll make a couple general observations. First, Diamonds are treated royally at this hotel, yet the benefits are not clearly spelled out. This is one of the few Park Hyatt that has a lounge and Diamonds are given lounge access for free.

Inside the lounge, breakfast, afternoon cake, and evening hor d’ oeuvres are served. The breakfast selection is very nice, but very Continental. Surprisingly, to me at least, the woman sitting next to me asked a staff member for eggs. Minutes later, freshly prepared eggs were brought to her table.

As far as I could see, there were no menus and no one said anything about hot breakfast options in the lounge. But I also ordered eggs and they were promptly delivered:

Then I discovered that Diamond members can take breakfast in the hotel restaurant, Apples, on a complimentary basis. (In my prior review, I included a dinner review in Apples). This was only gleaned by going down to the restaurant and asking. Of course I could have breakfast here, I was told.

Apples Restaurant & Bar

Apples offers a tremendous breakfast — far better than the lounge (and the lounge is also more than enough). If you’ve read my reviews before, you know I love fresh juices and Apples has a whole bar of freshly squeezed juices. Everything was tasty and the breads and cheese were amazingly fresh and flavorful.

But we’re not done yet! I later found (after checking out) that Diamonds can also order room service breakfast if they prefer. So now I have a reason to go back! I do think this hotel needs a sheet of paper explaining benefits to present to Diamond guests at check-in.

Here are a few pictures from the evening menu in the lounge:

Additionally, coffee and water is available all day and the Swiss-made Thermoplan machine makes very nice espresso drinks.

Park Hyatt Hamburg Room

While we were not upgraded to a suite, we were given a larger room with high ceilings and a beautiful bay window:

I loved the room to spread out and sitting at the desk while looking out at the busy street below.

CONCLUSION

I did not take any pictures in the spa and fitness center. It was crowded and has not changed at all from three years ago. Hamburg has a handful of nice hotels, but I have no desire to stay anywhere else.

The word luxury and Park Hyatt Hamburg cannot be put together – this is a dated old hotel in desperate need of refurbishment. While the pool and spa facilities were nice there were no towels, robes or slippers in the women’s amenities- I had to walk out to the Olympus entrance to fetch them in my bathers. I also found very little restaurants nearby as I was in a shopping precinct.
