Each week, my Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.
For this week’s Meal of the Week, we have a contest between swordfish and beef filet in SAS Business Class. Which was the better choice?
On the whole, I find SAS offers an excellent culinary experience onboard. The meal below is from a trip from Los Angeles to Stockholm a couple years ago.
Let’s start with the appetizer. The meal began with a smorgasbord of options including salad, lobster, and veal loin. Fresh bread and butter are also a treat on SAS. You can take as much or as little as you want.
It was time for the main event. My uncle and I were traveling together and decided to try something different and sample each other’s meal.
Swordfish is one of my favorite fish, so I opted for:
Grilled swordfish and purple mashed potato, spinach, white asparagus with lemon and dill butter.
It sounded amazing.
My uncle loves horseradish ordered the beef filet, described as:
Beef filet with horseradish mashed potatoes, sautéed mushroom, carrots and Merlot Demi-glaze.
Quite honestly, that sounded equally amazing. The chicken breast and ravioli also sounded great. I don’t think there was a wrong choice on this flight.
My uncles’ steak looked amazing, but how would it taste? Quite excellent. It was not a perfect medium rare, but even at medium well it was tasty.
But I picked the better choice. My swordfish was juicy and white asparagus and purple mashed potatoes were a perfect accompaniment. The dill on top of the fish also added a touch of extra flavor.
Dessert was a choice of cheese, fruit, cake, ice cream, or all of the above. I tried everything…
And of course, a superb cappuccino to finish.
CONCLUSION
Overall, this turned out to be one of the best business class flights of my life. I highly recommend SAS for many reasons, including the onboard dining.

Wow that’s some of the best airline food I’ve ever seen. Though I would not want a cappuccino before trying to sleep. Maybe before arrival!
SAS business class is just fantastic. The seat is an experience in itself.
Everything is elegant and comfortable.
I gotta ask.. what kind of heathen has a cappuccino to finish up a meal? An espresso or macchiato… sure… but… thanks for perpetuating American stereotypes.
They do so in Germany and Scandinavia as well. You’re unique in Italy and when I’m in Italy I’m respectful of the fact it is culturally frowned upon.
SAS do offer great business class service, it’s just a shame their route network is a bit limited!
