United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council.
What Is The Homeland Security Advisory Council?
The Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) leverages the experience, expertise, and national and global connections of the HSAC membership to provide the Secretary real-time, real-world and independent advice to support decision-making across the spectrum of homeland security operations.
The Homeland Security Advisory Council:
- Provides organizationally independent advice and recommendations to the Secretary, including the creation and implementation of critical and actionable policies for the security of the homeland
- Conducts research and provides policy analysis and recommendations on a variety of security issues
- Evaluates the impact of security related public and private policies in an attempt to formulate prospective security policies
That’s language borrowed from HSAC. Put simply, the HSAC offers outside voices to the DHS secretary to better inform policy choices. For example, HSAC may offer critical insight outside the federal government bubble on airport security or immigration processes.
Why Was Scott Kirby Appointed To Homeland Security Advisory Council?
Kirby not only has vast airline experience at America West, US Airways, American Airlines, and now United, but is also an Air Force veteran and began his career in the Pentagon.
HSAC is part of the Executive Office of the President of the United States. Kirby enjoyed great praise from the Biden Administration for its proactive employee vaccine mandate, which came months before the Biden Administration attempted a broader mandate for all companies with more than 100 employees.
Other members of the Council include past National Security Advisors, DHS secretaries, and other industry leaders.
Referring to his appointment, Kirby said:
“I’d like to thank Secretary Mayorkas for including me in the Homeland Security Advisory Council and working to forge partnerships to strengthen public and private cooperation. I look forward to thoughtful and productive discussions about the world around us and ensuring a safe, secure, and prosperous travel experience for our customers.”
CONCLUSION
United CEO Scott Kirby has joined the Homeland Security Advisory Council. While that won’t directly result in any changes for United passengers, his pro-airline, pro-movement positions may help moderate more draconian DHS policy that restricts or burdens travel.

All that boot licking paid off for him.
Matt,
Being an Air Force officer isn’t worth much when you are a dishonest and have no integrity ..
You are aware that Kirby is banned in Casinos in the US for card counting !!!!
Even Forbes magazine wrote about it
https://www.forbes.com/sites/tedreed/2019/12/06/united-airlines-exec-scott-kirby-used-to-count-cards-now-he-counts-regional-jets/amp/
His appointment is a joke … he isn’t very like at united so maybe he can just stay there and we can get a new CEO
Speak for yourself! I and many of my co-workers think he’s incredibly smart and a great person to lead the company out of these turbulent times.
If it is indeed true that Kirby is banned in casinos for card counting, then he has gone up in my estimation!!
Card counting is not considered cheating. However casinos have the prerogative of taking or not taking your action!! That’s ask that means.
Maybe he should work to drop the stupid rule that you cannot bring liquids over 3.4oz through TSA.
I came here to post the same thing!
Robert Isom was appointed as well. AA’s internal announcement here:

Glad Homeland has an advisory panel. When they first formed, they didn’t need any advice. They knew it all.
