When the plane lands, pulls up to the gate, and the seatbelt light is turned off, is it rude to get up? One Delta Air Lines passenger certainly thinks so and spoke her mind to her seatmate after she quickly sprang up.
Delta Passenger Upset That Her Seatmate Quickly Stood Up After Flight, But She Had Every Right To…
A woman got quite upset when her seatmate got up quickly after their Delta flight landed. In fact, she became outraged. In fact, she launched a (NSFW) tirade against her seatmate:
It wasn’t the message, it was the delivery of the message

I’m surprised so many are defending this crude woman on reddit, even if they are defending her message rather than her word choice (“it wasn’t the message, but the delivery of the message”).
Her word choice is disgusting…I hope we can all agree on that. It is the mark of a stupid person to speak like that, especially in public, and even more especially inside a confined metal tube.
But I also disagree with her message…strongly actually. And for the record, I tend to remain seated when the plane lands (even if I’m seated in the aisle) and this annoys antsy seatmates as well. But I know many are restless and they want to get up and I don’t think standing up slows down the deboarding process.
People have a right to get up after remaining seated for so long. It’s one thing to shove and push…that’s never okay…but just to stand up or even to move quickly down the aisle before others get up? As View From The Wing writes, by using all the available space in the aircraft you are helping other passengers be more comfortable too.
So yes, you can stand up. And yes, you can even “make a run for it” as long as you are not bumping others. This woman was totally out of line both in her word choice and her very notion of how to act when a plane lands.
Unless a request to remain seated has been made by cabin crew (.e.g., to accomodate people with tight connections), why not stand up? You’re not hurting anyone. Plus, since I’m at the front of the plane, I get the window seat’s occupant’s bad down and place it on my sest. This means my sestmate can exit without slowing the flow.
That is a fair point – if a FA asks folks to remain seated for others onboard, it is rude to get up if you do not have a tight coneciton.
Disagree! FAs seem to do this all the time. Some as a matter of practice, even when you’re on time. I generally deboard faster than anyone. Me getting off when it’s my turn isn’t going to keep anyone behind me from getting to the Sky train any faster.
I’m willing to wait if others have a tight connection. If I have a tight connection I’d like that courtesy. When the plane lands, I’m either going to the next flight’s gate or to baggage claim. In neither case is a few minute delay going to affect me. I will be waiting a few minutes less at the next gate or spend a few minutes less waiting for the bag to arrive.
Some may have a tight connection even if the plane arrives on time. They may have booked a 90 minute connection that is now 45 because of flight- time changes. They may have discovered the next gate is a long walk or requires a shuttle. I’ll take a chance my being delayed slightly is some con. It is cost free.
When the bell goes off, I am ready to move. I have my carry-on bag under seat and nothing overhead. If I can move up a few rows, then I am doing. I am not doing anything wrong.
Wait your freaking turn, you contemptible simp.
I usually select aisle seats on all my flights. I have severe arthritis on both my knees so I suffer from a lot of pain if seated with my knees bent for a long time. Thus, as soon as the seatbelt signs go off after arriving at a gate, I am the first one to stand up. It helps me to recover and I try to extend my knees before I start walking. Now, I never move up the aisle. I wait until it is time for my row to deplane, grab by bags from the overhead bin and leave. I see nothing wrong in doing that so this passenger should treat her mental health and stop making a scene.
Mark Christopher, pay attention. This is how you do it.
So, this is what it’s come to for you ‘travel hackers’ to meet your content quotas??
I’m 6’8″, so even F seats are uncomfortable as I sit below my knees. I try to be vertical before the *ding* is done sounding. I do so even when I can’t stand up straight in a regional jet.
How ‘bout that? Dave Edwards is an African-American “asinine” female with vile language.
The issue is not that they stood up; the issue is that they tried to push past everyone waiting to get to the door. I see people doing this all the time and it is rude. There is an orderly way to deplane the aircraft.
NO no no. Don’t cut the line.
“or even to move quickly down the aisle before others get up? “. Yeah that’s not going to happen. Someone pushes past me and I’ll follow them and shove their head up their ass. First I ask them to take their pants off or it will hurt. They always look so confused.
Why did you only come after me with the chain?
She should mind her own business!!If people do not get up and think about where their luggage is stowed–it takes a lot longer..
Can you not remember where you put it or something? Then you are ALSO breaking airline courtesy, because your bag should be in the bin RIGHT ABOVE YOUR SEAT! If EVERYONE did this, once again, we could all have a pleasant ride. But assholes throw their luggage in a bin the second they cross onto the plane, then walk 3 more miles to find a seat. Now, you can wait. Especially if you have to walk backwards against the crowd to get to your luggage, because other people stole the bins upfront, now everyone in back of row 4 has to wait for one idiot to climb the seats. People suck
What a stupid woman.
I had two large pulmonary embolism’s in 2015 ( now Eliquos for life) and have to be careful being seated for longer than than two continuous hours and I am that guy that walks up and down the aisle. That is the reason I am up from my aisle seat as soon as the “ding’ is heard. I do not go past my row, and gladly help get bags down if requested.
People run yellow lights, merge at the last second, pass in no passing zones, cut the queue at theme parks, bring a full cart to the ten items or less register, and on and on. Why do you expect that to change because you’re on an aircraft?
