Breaking now — a shooting in the baggage claim area of T2 at Ft. Lauderdale Airport (FLL) has left eight injured and five dead. The airport is currently closed.
The shooting occurred around 1pm ET. The shooter has been apprehended but airport exits remain sealed. Apparently, the shooter had a Star Wars t-shirt on and did not speak while he was shooting. Identified as Esteban Santiago, the culprit is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves and allegedly has a history of mental problems. Arriving from Toronto on an Air Canada flight, Santiago pulled a gun out of his checked baggage, loaded it, and began executing people with shots in the head at point-blank range.
Police were on the seen almost immediately, but not before he managed to kill five and injure eight.
Passengers were initially herded onto the tarmac near the Delta terminal (T2), but later moved back inside. Santiago was apprehended and remains alive. News emerging this evening is that he may have terror links—
Sources have told CBS news that Santiago walked into an FBI office in Anchorage in November last year claiming he was being forced to fight for ISIS.
At 2:30p ET, more shots were heard and police were seen rushing to locate a second and potentially more gunmen. This turned out to be a false alarm: police believe there was only one shooter.
Note that because this happened in the baggage claim area, the secure side of the airport was not breached.
