Singapore First or Lufthansa First + First Class Terminal?

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 6, 2011 12 Comments

What would you choose, Singapore First or Lufthansa First and a few hours in LH’s famed First Class Terminal in Frankfurt?

This may not even be a decision I have to make, but I want to be prepared should the decision arise.

While I have traveled on dozens of airlines in my lifetime including the majority of Star Alliance members, I have never flown on Singapore Airlines, often heralded as the world’s best airline.

Singapore operates a daily flight between Frankfurt and New York Kennedy and occasionally makes business and first class space available, often just days before departure.

I am confirmed on Lufthansa in first class on that route Saturday morning and am already looking forward to the First Class Terminal experience. At the same time, if space on Singapore opens up, I would be very interested in trying them out–and I would love their KrisWorld in-flight entertainment on a nine hour daytime flight.

Should space magically open up, what would you do? As I mentioned, I probably will not even have the choice to make, but I will be closely monitoring award availability the next day and a half to see if SQ space opens up.

Flight times are not an issue: I would be connecting to the same United flight to LAX. I do see that a snowstorm will be hitting NYC tomorrow, but am banking on my Saturday afternoon flight not being canceled (and maybe getting a bump!).

How much time would you have in FRA to enjoy the lounge?

I think I would opt for the Singapore flight just to give it a whirl.

If you can get first, I would take Singapore in a heartbeat. If it is business, I would keep the LH flight just to keep the first class terminal.

@magiciansampras: About four hours in the lounge.

I’d pick SQ F it it were to come open. LH F tends to be pretty easy to obtain compared to some other *A carriers depending on what miles you’re using.

LH is better choice. Later 11AM flight, better to enjoy adult beverages and caviar. SQ F shines less on breakfast flights. Better to sleep later. LH F lounge and private sedan to plane.

Go with the new experience, but only in first class like NIck said.

While seats on LH are a bit dated, the food and service have always been top notch for me! And you cannot beat the FCT and sedan to your aircraft. Go with LH for this trip and save a SQ F trip for a transpac.

SQ F. Even ex-FRA. It’s a far better experience in the air, and you can always check out the FCT later. True LH F award space has dried up on 747 routes, but all the Airbus routes have the same availability as ever…

I do enjoy the First Class Terminal! But if you happen to be arriving in FRA in LH F? then you can at least use one of the First Class Lounges prior to departure to whittle away the layover. And the lounges themselves are very similar, minus the private security and passport control and tarmac ride of course (even the B lounge won’t get you a ride out to the SQ flight).

Considering the fact that LH F availability is going to decline (with the new F cabin), I’d go with LH. The FCT would also be a big +100 in my book.

    LH all the way.

The SQ space never opened up so I’m relaxing in the FCT right now. Such a treat!
