The Last Snow Day Of The Season In LA…

Yesterday, we enjoyed what will likely be the last snow day of the season after a road trip to the northeastern corner of Los Angeles County.

Snow Day In Los Angeles County…The Last Of The Season

While much of the country has been blanketed by snow this winter season, Los Angeles has been mostly lovely. It was turning out to be a very dry season, but we’ve had consecutive storms over the last few weeks giving us a lot of rain across the county and snow in the mountains.

I hosted some Ukrainian friends for dinner on Saturday night and they suggested we join them in the snow on Sunday afternoon since winter ends on Thursday and we see spiking spring (almost summer-like) temperatures starting early next week.

The destination was Peavine Campground in Valyermo, California, an unincorporated community in the Mojave Desert.

From LA, the drive took about 90 minutes, taking us up I-5 and then to CA-14 before we took smaller highways out into the desert and up the mountain.

It’s not like my kids are not used to snow–we go to Germany often in the winter and ran into some snow during our road trip to Chicago in January–but it was still a novelty for them and they had great fun sledding down the hill, building snowmen, and throwing snowballs at dad…

We also enjoyed delicious homemade smash cheeseburgers for lunch…even better than In-N-Out!

Being a city slicker, I’ve only been fishing once my entire life, but there was also fishing available in Jackson Lake, next door.

Candidly, I prefer to come home from church on Sunday afternoons and take a nap…but I’m so glad we made this journey…the kids really loved it and I love the family we shared the time with.

The beauty of living in Los Angeles is that you are never too far from the mountains, snow, beach, or forest, and in between you have temperate weather and world-class cuisine. I’m thankful for Southern California.

This makes me homesick for LA! Thanks for sharing this. Looks like it was a wonderful afternoon.

Not sure where in LA you are but surely Big Bear is a better experience, even if you’re not skiing, and not much farther…but that windy drive up the mountain can be brutal if you get car sick (painful memories as a child haha)

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a lot of low landers made the trek up to the mountains. There are so many shoe prints in the snow. What a great thing to do. I’m happy that you get out and explore your environment. You do have a little bit of everything in and around the general Los Angeles area. Nice to see the kids having fun. Good daddy. You must be a great father. Good job!

Have the children learned to ski? We started the kids on the steep driveway in southern Maryland ( often it was snirt (snow + dirt). It looks like you all had a great day.

They have not – one of the many items on our bucket list (though we want to do in Switzerland). I’ve never been on skis in my life, though a friend my age was just injured sking and I’ve known so many people injured by sking…I don’t know…

There really is no city in the world like Los Angeles….the mountains, the ocean, and the desert all within a couple hour drive. Nice pics and thanks for sharing!
