Southwest Airlines Flights Resume After Nationwide Ground Stop Blamed On Firewall Failure

Southwest Airlines flights have resumed after a technical glitch led to a short nationwide ground stop. Southwest has blamed the issue on firewall failure.

Southwest Airlines Firewall Failure Results in Temporary Nationwide Ground Stop

For roughly an hour this morning, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop which halted all Southwest Airlines flights from taking off.

This morning @SouthwestAir experienced a technical issue with one of their internal systems.

At the airline’s request, the FAA paused Southwest’s departures as they resolved the issue.

The pause has been lifted and their service has resumed.

Initially labeled a technically issue, a statement from Southwest blames the issue on a third-party firewall failure:

“Southwest has resumed operations after temporarily pausing flight activity this morning to work through data connection issues resulting from a firewall failure. Early this morning, a vendor-supplied firewall went down and connection to some operational data was unexpectedly lost.”

At last check, 1843 Southwest flights faced delays today, accounting for 44% of all flights. On a positive note, only 11% of flights were cancelled, representing less than 1% of overall service.

In the meantime, however, hundreds of thousands of flyers have faced delays in reaching their ultimate destination. As delays cascade through the day, there may be flight cancellations later this evening.

Southwest has advised passengers impacted by delays to check self-rebooking options on SOuthwest’s website:

We’ve resumed operations this morning following a pause in service. Please visit https://t.co/64eTbzR9ph to check your flight status and explore self-service options as we work to restore operations and accommodate disrupted Customers as quickly as possible. pic.twitter.com/xGLJLsbiQV

Telephone call centers remain clogged.

CONCLUSION

A southwest Airlines ground stop has resulted in the delay of over 1,800 flights. Thus far, cancellations are limited. The culprit is a “firewall” issue with a software vendor. Check Southwest.com or the  Southwest mobile app for rebooking options: some may be able to turn this ground stop to their advantage by rebooking on nonstop flights at not cost.

Were you impacted by the Southwest Airlines firewall failure?

Initially blamed on equipment but I guess they meant technical equipment/software? I take equipment to mean planes and similar but I’m also not up on all lingo and perhaps specifics didn’t matter in the announcement

Live Action is an anti-abortion organization that intentionally misleads people on issues relating to abortion in order to produce viral videos that shock. They don’t even pretend to be a news source. OT for a post about Southwest’s meltdown, and a great example of why links are technically “banned.”

          As explained countless times:

          content > source
          macro > micro

Watching you and @billy defend this kind of thing says more about you both than anything else. If you don’t like the source, find another. I just happened to use what was readily available right in front of me.

“With respect to the enforcement of criminal law, any prescribed minimum age of consent to sex must be applied in a non-discriminatory manner. Enforcement may not be linked to the sex/gender of participants or age of consent to marriage. Moreover, sexual conduct involving persons below the domestically prescribed minimum age of consent to sex may be consensual, in fact, if not in law. In this context, the enforcement of criminal law should reflect the rights and capacity of persons under 18 years of age to make decisions about engaging in consensual sexual conduct and their right to be heard in matters concerning them.

Pursuant to their evolving capacities and progressive autonomy, persons under 18 years of age should participate in decisions affecting them, with due regard to their age, maturity and best interests, and with specific attention to non-discrimination guarantees.”

As long as the TCAS or MCAS is upgraded on the 737MAX and I’m not praying that my life won’t end at 37,000 ft.
