Southwest Airlines Allows “Lady In Red” To Fly In Revealing Attire But Throws Off Seatmate Who Defended Her

Another dress code story on Southwest Airlines, this time with a new twist: it wasn’t the “lady in red” wearing a corset that got thrown off, it was the older lady onboard who chose to defend her.

Southwest Airlines Throws Off Woman Who Defended “Lady In Red” Wearing Corset, Crying Foul Over What Constitutes “Offensive”

The “lady in red” was a was a young woman who chose to wear a red corset on a Southwest Airlines flight from Sacramento (SMF). While boarding, the gate agent asked her if she had a sweater or jacket and told her she had to cover up. When she said she had nothing to cover up, the gate agent allowed her to board, but said she would bring her a t-shirt to wear.

Onboard, the woman was given a t-shirt and asked to cover up by a flight attendant, but a woman seated nearby jumped to her defense, wondering why this young lady was being targeted when it was over 100ºF outside and many of the passengers were wearing revealing attire.

A flight attendant explained:

“She is wearing a corset and this is a family company. Some people find it offensive.”

The woman said she found the man wearing a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt sitting behind her offensive and the flight attendant said nothing.

The situation escalated and the older woman was thrown off…but not the young lady in red. The police were even called in.

Basically @SouthwestAir slut shamed a young woman of color for wearing a tank top they deemed offensive, forced her to wear a company issued sweater, removed me for questioning their misogynistic policy, exercised a double standard when enforcing an alleged offensive attire rule

— Melinna Bobadilla (@MelinnaTeatrina) July 11, 2022

The woman has called this a racial incident:

The raggedy folks at @SouthwestAir in Sacramento disrespected two women of color, endangered one by needlessly calling the cops, and went out of their way to protect a conservative white man. Yup that tracks. @SouthwestAir is steamy, stale trash. Go out of business already

— Melinna Bobadilla (@MelinnaTeatrina) July 11, 2022

Here’s some more insight on what happened from the view of the young woman:

https://www.tiktok.com/@maybejacy/video/7119235451696762155?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7119858779755365931

She captions her video:

Give me my money back smelly hoes @Southwest Airlines or send me a bottle of expensive champagne. 😘

She later posted a follow-up video trashing Southwest Airlines (caution – foul language):

Once again, I find it curious that it is always Southwest Airlines (or American Airlines) involved with these dress code stories. The problem, as always, is that Southwest Airlines has an “I’ll know it when I see it” dress code that bans offensive clothing, but does not lay out even general guidelines about what constitutes offense.

And of course “offense” is quite subjective, especially when it comes to female attire.

Final thought. I know summer travel is stressful and if you miss your flight you may wind up waiting days for a new flight, but I’m a little disappointed that the young lady did not step off and by principle refuse to fly when her defender was kicked off.

Sure, she didn’t ask for the help in the first place and we don’t know the tone, volume, or word choice used by the older woman. But it seems to me this was a nice gesture by the older lady (not matter your belief on whether the young woman was properly clothed or not). The least the young lady could have done is step off the plane with her defender.

CONCLUSION

A “lady in red” was not thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight…but her defender was, after complaining that the young lady was targeted for “offensive” attire but not the man behind her wearing a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt. Whatever your view on this young lady’s attire, the “offensive” standard cries out for clarification.

Come on. I like looking at pretty ladies as much as the next guy, but a corset is not acceptable attire for an aircraft. This woman has no class, which is obvious by her attitude. She also has to throw the race card in of course. There is also likely much more to the story about the other woman that got kicked off. Does anyone really believe she was kicked off just for saying she disagreed. This is just another example of the entitlement crowd thinking they don’t have to follow the rules and that anything goes.

FOR FREAKING REAL DUDE. Everything is not about you. IT’S 100°. We should in no way have been the proponents of dictating female clothing. Ever. But we were and now you don’t care what our history is of arresting women for wearing pants – you’d think she should dress to your comfort or be kicked off because you can’t handle seeing her shoulders. Do you lose it every time you see doiles or lace? Were you uninformed that breasts exist because they’re still not out.

As much as you would like to think its all about me, its about having a respectful and civil society. It really doesn’t matter if you are male or female, you should dress appropriately as it is respectful to others around you. There was a time when people took into account other people around them with their actions, appearance, and demeanor. It was called manors and proper etiquette. You may think that makes me sound like a prude and old fashioned, but society functioned much better when people practiced it.

One may be semi sexual to some the other is outright disrespectful to our nation as a whole with no other meaning. You shouldn’t be able to get on a plane with a short disrespecting our president verse a corset that covers everything. It’s funny how you only argue your single minded beliefs

If there is a dress code, it should be posted clearly across the board for all to see., with zero reason for questions as to what is ok and what is not.
Until you own the airline, you have zero right to post if she is ok to fly or not. She wasn’t sitting next to you in the cockpit.

This was also the time when you had to wear gloves and hat just to go shopping. Women couldn’t wear pants to work in most white collar jobs. I won’t comment on what the other passenger said or did because, frankly, I was not a witness to the incident. Based on the pictures, there was nothing disrespectful with what she was wearing. I have worn tank tops on many flights and no one has ever said anything to me on any airline. There are so many more important things to be concerned about.

Interesting; she didn’t say that the lady who stuck up for her was thrown off simply for being a woman of color. As a matter of fact the woman this story is about, the “lady in red”, simply stated that she was dress coded. She can wear what she wants & she didn’t even bother with the “race card” as you so eloquently put it.

Lol, good grief the “family company’ defense is so vague, prudish and absurd. It’s a flight, not a church fundraiser. I don’t like what she’s wearing either but if you can’t fly without being “offended” by other people’s clothing choices, then drive.

On the flip side, it’s a private company, it’s not riding a public bus or transit. SW can define the dress code however they want and if people cannot adhere to it, then THEY SHOULD BE ONES DRIVING. Why is it so hard for people to have decency these days? This is what is wrong with America. What used to be wrong is right and what was right is wrong. SMH.

It’s a large country with diverse views on modesty. Yes of course private companies can do as they please, but if SW has no clear policy and apparently leaves it up to the “offense” levels of individual FAs, ticketed passengers are right to protest at the inconvenience. I think she looks and sounds terrible but the freedoms that allow her to do things I don’t like are the same ones that allow me to do things she doesn’t like.

Not on board MY airplane Jack. You folks need to get over the ‘freedom to do what you want” idea on commercial aircraft. Doesn’t work that way, and if some people get away with poor clothing/protest statements some of the time, doesn’t mean its right.

But that’s the problem that causes trouble in the friendly skies because nobody reads anymore. 5 minutes of knowing what is expected of pax before, during and after your itinerary saves an incident. I agree that the grammar needs editing, but so does some math. Nine out of ten equals one, or precisely zero point nine. Nine of ten is nine, if that was the intended equation.

Are people so stupid they define EVERY problem, disagreement or issue by race? Apparently chronic ignorance knows no bounds. Ain’t that right Jill Biden?

I’m with those of you who say let’s co-operate with the airlines. They have a right and an obligation to be considerate of everyone. Bc you don’t agree means nothing. Throwing out F bombs while calling yourself ppl of color verifies how low you will go. Acting childish over a polite request verifies the airlines judged u correctly. Your rude, loud mouthed co-passenger verified she needed to go too.

The lady found the Let’s Go Brandon t shirt offensive?

    Why?

It’s not lawd…. I am sorry but she is wearing a full corset and does not even have her pants pulled up. Go look at her other Tik Toc videos and you notice a theme…..

Maybe the other people wearing more revealing things at least had their pants pulled up and were not wearing sweats….

Lastly I find it funny that the other passenger has blocked people from commenting on her BS post….

Isn’t it common knowledge that this attire is a standard dress code on Spirit. These women should fly the more appropriate airline which caters to their preferences. Wasn’t Spirit originally thought of as the airline choice for this subset? Southwest is a different story that doesn’t play when experiencing social terrorism.

Matthew Klint, I have a comment on a different aspect of this article. Your description of the “white knight” seatmate as an “older woman” is ageist. You repeatedly refer to her as an “older woman.” This is both untrue and inappropriate.

Let’s call the unrepentant passenger in the red corset “Jacy”. According to your screenshot, the Twitter screed is from a “Melinna Bobadilla.” If the photo attached to Melinna Bobadilla’s account is of Jacy’s ejected seatmate, she is not old at all! To my eyes, she looks like a mid-20something-year-old woman. Thirty, tops.

When I hear the term “older woman,” I picture someone in her 60s or 70s. Melinna Bobadilla may be oldER than Jacy–who looks not very much older than 20–but only by a few years, not by decades!

Melinna Bobadilla’s age (even relative age) is not relevant to the story. It does not seem to be a factor in her being escorted off the plane. When I first read the story, I thought that you, the writer, were trying to appeal to the reader’s sense of outrage over injustice or rudeness to a senior citizen. This is not the case at all.

I therefore submit that this is a case of ageism–irrelevant mention or undue emphasis on age. Also, I wasn’t sure if I detected a whiff of negative connotation with the word “older” in this story–is it implied that the other woman is less attractive, less sexy, shrill* (as in the trope of a “shrill old woman”), or even helpless (after all, she was booted off the plane)?

Please be aware of the descriptors you choose. If it’s not germane to the story, choose one that is either pertinent, or neutral (like “other woman,” or “seatmate,” both of which you also used–more appropriately). Thank you.

*I do think her screed rings as shrill! But that’s unconnected to her age.

I’ll tell you what’s offensive…that a 40 year-old is being referred as an “older woman”. How about just refer to her as a woman?

Not as in objectively old but as comparatively older than the other passenger.

C’mon! She’s wearing evening bedroom attire… no different than wearing pajamas. Isn’t it obvious she can barely afford common sense and manners, so she can only afford to fly commercial?
