Another dress code story on Southwest Airlines, this time with a new twist: it wasn’t the “lady in red” wearing a corset that got thrown off, it was the older lady onboard who chose to defend her.
Southwest Airlines Throws Off Woman Who Defended “Lady In Red” Wearing Corset, Crying Foul Over What Constitutes “Offensive”
The “lady in red” was a was a young woman who chose to wear a red corset on a Southwest Airlines flight from Sacramento (SMF). While boarding, the gate agent asked her if she had a sweater or jacket and told her she had to cover up. When she said she had nothing to cover up, the gate agent allowed her to board, but said she would bring her a t-shirt to wear.
Onboard, the woman was given a t-shirt and asked to cover up by a flight attendant, but a woman seated nearby jumped to her defense, wondering why this young lady was being targeted when it was over 100ºF outside and many of the passengers were wearing revealing attire.
A flight attendant explained:
“She is wearing a corset and this is a family company. Some people find it offensive.”
The woman said she found the man wearing a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt sitting behind her offensive and the flight attendant said nothing.
The situation escalated and the older woman was thrown off…but not the young lady in red. The police were even called in.
Basically @SouthwestAir slut shamed a young woman of color for wearing a tank top they deemed offensive, forced her to wear a company issued sweater, removed me for questioning their misogynistic policy, exercised a double standard when enforcing an alleged offensive attire rule
— Melinna Bobadilla (@MelinnaTeatrina) July 11, 2022
The woman has called this a racial incident:
The raggedy folks at @SouthwestAir in Sacramento disrespected two women of color, endangered one by needlessly calling the cops, and went out of their way to protect a conservative white man. Yup that tracks. @SouthwestAir is steamy, stale trash. Go out of business already
— Melinna Bobadilla (@MelinnaTeatrina) July 11, 2022
Here’s some more insight on what happened from the view of the young woman:
She captions her video:
Give me my money back smelly hoes @Southwest Airlines or send me a bottle of expensive champagne. 😘
She later posted a follow-up video trashing Southwest Airlines (caution – foul language):
@maybejacy #greenscreen the world hating women ig #fyp
Once again, I find it curious that it is always Southwest Airlines (or American Airlines) involved with these dress code stories. The problem, as always, is that Southwest Airlines has an “I’ll know it when I see it” dress code that bans offensive clothing, but does not lay out even general guidelines about what constitutes offense.
And of course “offense” is quite subjective, especially when it comes to female attire.
Final thought. I know summer travel is stressful and if you miss your flight you may wind up waiting days for a new flight, but I’m a little disappointed that the young lady did not step off and by principle refuse to fly when her defender was kicked off.
Sure, she didn’t ask for the help in the first place and we don’t know the tone, volume, or word choice used by the older woman. But it seems to me this was a nice gesture by the older lady (not matter your belief on whether the young woman was properly clothed or not). The least the young lady could have done is step off the plane with her defender.
CONCLUSION
A “lady in red” was not thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight…but her defender was, after complaining that the young lady was targeted for “offensive” attire but not the man behind her wearing a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt. Whatever your view on this young lady’s attire, the “offensive” standard cries out for clarification.
(H/T: View From The Wing)
Come on. I like looking at pretty ladies as much as the next guy, but a corset is not acceptable attire for an aircraft. This woman has no class, which is obvious by her attitude. She also has to throw the race card in of course. There is also likely much more to the story about the other woman that got kicked off. Does anyone really believe she was kicked off just for saying she disagreed. This is just another example of the entitlement crowd thinking they don’t have to follow the rules and that anything goes.
I totally agree with everything you said
Did you ever live in PA, like in the ’70’s? Looking for old friends I worked with!
FOR FREAKING REAL DUDE. Everything is not about you. IT’S 100°. We should in no way have been the proponents of dictating female clothing. Ever. But we were and now you don’t care what our history is of arresting women for wearing pants – you’d think she should dress to your comfort or be kicked off because you can’t handle seeing her shoulders. Do you lose it every time you see doiles or lace? Were you uninformed that breasts exist because they’re still not out.
As much as you would like to think its all about me, its about having a respectful and civil society. It really doesn’t matter if you are male or female, you should dress appropriately as it is respectful to others around you. There was a time when people took into account other people around them with their actions, appearance, and demeanor. It was called manors and proper etiquette. You may think that makes me sound like a prude and old fashioned, but society functioned much better when people practiced it.
Absolutely spot on sir! We are in the minority these days. It’s a total shame what society has become. The sense of decency and respect for one another are gone.
A tank top less coverage corset goes all the way down on you if it was Madonna on that plane would you complain?hum if it was lizzo ? Both do the same ones a different color and size ,Madonna started that trend yrs ago, that girl is flat chested so nothing is out I bet the tank top girls were showing more then her. her body, her choice not yours
It’s funny you don’t bring up the let’s go Brandon shirt at all. Is that not offensive? One may be semi sexual to some the other is outright disrespectful to our nation as a whole with no other meaning. You shouldn’t be able to get on a plane with a short disrespecting our president verse a corset that covers everything. It’s funny how you only argue your single minded beliefs
Biden is disrespectful to our nation. The masses support the “lets go brandon movement”
I Agree,I like to dress nice and wear tank tops and summer dresses but I don’t go out in something like that it’s disrespectful. I think you should cover alittle an save it for the honeymoon.
I’m confused because on TELEVISION they show much worse. Even ADS along the ROAD where families see it even more! She was in a SEAT where no one could see but the people next to her. GET A GRIP
It’s not 100 degrees on the plane!!!!!! This person was out of line wearing a corset on the plane period!!!! A corset, in case you didn’t know, is considered underwear!!!
you are soo ignorant about the reasons for dress codes. I am a commercial pilot, and your ‘rights’ to do/dress however you want to STOP at the door to my plane, thank you. I have, and will continue to refuse service to anyone who challenges the safety, well-being and cooperative atmosphere of MY flight. That includes arguing with MY flight service crew who you MUST obey regardless of how you freaking pansies want to behave. You are NOT entitled to MY flight, you have purchased the PRIVILEGE to fly with us, and that’s a fact, jack!
*clapping*
People have really forgotten not everything is their “right”. Some things are still just a “”privilege”! Excellent response!
Well said, sir!
Encouraging to
Know there are pilots like you Bruce.
This is by far, the most asinine thing you as a pilot can say. This young girl was clothed. There are people in tank tops and shorts with their asses hanging out, that are flying on planes.
If there is a dress code, it should be posted clearly across the board for all to see., with zero reason for questions as to what is ok and what is not.
Until you own the airline, you have zero right to post if she is ok to fly or not. She wasn’t sitting next to you in the cockpit.
This was total ridiculous comment on your part to make.
Troll
She was not offending anyone. My children have seen people in bathing suits, But I am really angered for allowing a racist to wear supportive tee shirt for racists. Racist should be a crime.
How the hell is a «Let’s go Brandon» tshirt racist on any way, form or manner?
the same way a burning cross is racist. Same way form or mannter
That’s quite ignorant. Biden is the worst president in history. Let’s go Brandon is about Biden, not about a race. Their are many black, Latino, gay Republicans and you are quite uneducated for generalizing an entire group of people as something they are not.
Only resist on this situation are the “people of color” and their victim complex.
The t shirt in question makes a political statement NOT a racist comment. The race card gets thrown around at every
I couldn’t tell she was a woman of color. Maybe Hispanic but I really couldn’t tell. I dont know why the older woman was kicked off but maybe she got out of hand. The young ladies top looked no different than a tank top. This whole thing was stupid.
I remember my mom dressing us up to fly. My mother wore a dress and gloves and my dad a suit and tie. This were the days when respect was a thing.
This was also the time when you had to wear gloves and hat just to go shopping. Women couldn’t wear pants to work in most white collar jobs. I won’t comment on what the other passenger said or did because, frankly, I was not a witness to the incident. Based on the pictures, there was nothing disrespectful with what she was wearing. I have worn tank tops on many flights and no one has ever said anything to me on any airline. There are so many more important things to be concerned about.
Absolutely agree with you. If one doesn’t like it, don’t fly it.
It was a corset with pants, not cheek-Showing booty shorts. If anyone was complaining it was probably an insecure, Jealous wife, not concenred mother.
Interesting; she didn’t say that the lady who stuck up for her was thrown off simply for being a woman of color. As a matter of fact the woman this story is about, the “lady in red”, simply stated that she was dress coded. She can wear what she wants & she didn’t even bother with the “race card” as you so eloquently put it.
Totally Agree! No one gets thrown off a plane for saying they don’t agree with something! I wouldn’t want to sit beside someone dressed like she was! Her pants unbuttoned so far you could damn near see her who ha! Come on how appropriate did she seriously think this “outfit” was?! If it’s that hot then why not put on shorts like you said everyone else was wearing instead of unbuttoned and unzipped pants?! Just trying to cause trouble and she what she can get for free!!
well said.
If u gonna fly look decent, look civilized, not trashy or like a hooker.
I agree. Her top was not appropriate to wear on a plane. I like that SW Airlines gave her a shirt.
She’s covered up.more than she’d be at a beach or swimming pool. I don’t see what the big deal is?
“She is wearing a corset and this is a family company. Some people find it offensive.”
Lol, good grief the “family company’ defense is so vague, prudish and absurd. It’s a flight, not a church fundraiser. I don’t like what she’s wearing either but if you can’t fly without being “offended” by other people’s clothing choices, then drive.
On the flip side, it’s a private company, it’s not riding a public bus or transit. SW can define the dress code however they want and if people cannot adhere to it, then THEY SHOULD BE ONES DRIVING. Why is it so hard for people to have decency these days? This is what is wrong with America. What used to be wrong is right and what was right is wrong. SMH.
It’s a large country with diverse views on modesty. Yes of course private companies can do as they please, but if SW has no clear policy and apparently leaves it up to the “offense” levels of individual FAs, ticketed passengers are right to protest at the inconvenience. I think she looks and sounds terrible but the freedoms that allow her to do things I don’t like are the same ones that allow me to do things she doesn’t like.
Not on board MY airplane Jack. You folks need to get over the ‘freedom to do what you want” idea on commercial aircraft. Doesn’t work that way, and if some people get away with poor clothing/protest statements some of the time, doesn’t mean its right.
She needs clothes on and stop being a skank.
Anyone who is “offended” by her clothes is probably just ashamed that they would have popped a boner if they saw her in person. All the important parts are covered so what’s the problem? You probably should stay away from the beach, you might be shocked at what you see.
If southwest wants to be the airline of puritans, they should publish how much visible skin is acceptable.
That’s dumb to say because you implying you can go to work wearing a bikini. There is a dress code for certain occasions. This world has no shame or morale or manners anymore. Specially women these days have no self respect for their own body. It is a shame.
She’s a customer not an employee
what is your obsession with stories involving women!!!!
IS it the traveling alone that does it to you?!!
Honey, it’s all about the clicks. Nothing personal.
If white people didn’t base their entire life around racism and keeping poc subjugated, you wouldnt have to hear about the race card because Youre the ones who perpetuate racism. My only issue is why take up for this lady when people like her wouldnt stand up for another woman of color. Will never get it
People like you base your entire life around racism because you suffer from a delusion oppression complex. You’re not oppressed, you’re entitled.
It’s not your plane lady so shut up and do what you’re told to do. Those guys know what they’re doing. If you’d like to have it your way, CHARTER A PLANE, you imbecile!
Yeah, the name calling is nowhere as offensive as a woman dressing as she pleases. I would have found the Brandon shirt far more offensive than even your insult.
That’s because you’re liberal snowflake
The let’s go Brandon shirt wearer isn’t offensive… he’s just a future mass shooter… probably on his way to scout locations
The lady in the corset did not give the employees any problems. Be sure to study before making a comment otherwise your friends will get their perceptions of you acknowledged.
This was your stance towards masking rules too, yes?
Or was that impingement on your freedumbs just a bridge too far.
The anti maskers were proven right.
Get over it.
Yeah airlines do have dress codes for pax. Usually these dress codes are spelled out online for all to read. As you buy your ticket it’s best you read everything that pertains to your itinerary. But that’s the problem that causes trouble in the friendly skies because nobody reads anymore. 5 minutes of knowing what is expected of pax before, during and after your itinerary saves an incident. Due diligence can save a hassle.
I think the problem is that the dress code isnt written down anywhere. That is what the article said anyway.
Jeez… one thing to see in your previous posts that ones like these are the MoneyMakers, and quite another to see it in action. Now you can treat yourself to a large coffee instead of regular, tomorrow morning!
American women have no class and are nothing entitled.
Is the “lady in red” considered a person of color? What color is that? Seriously, I never considered myself a person of color but since my skin is darker than this lady and our VP I might start claiming I am people of color. Give me a break!!! As for the LGB shirt, why is it bad to give incentive to our beloved president? People are out of their minds snowflakes nowadays. Don’t like it? Don’t look at it. Mind your own business.
I dunno about the rest of your rant, but I agree that minding one’s business and not looking at something one doesn’t want to see are usually good ideas.
It is not about rant. It is about understanding what people mean when they use the race card and the color of their skin. Look at her skin color. Do you think that she is a person of color? It is the same as Elizabeth Warren saying she is Native American. LOL!!!
Bet if Selena was wearing her bustier it would be fine. The Kardashians just put out a line of corsets but guess y’all would have covered them up or kicked them off too? $10 says the assholes who are talking poorly about this young ladies attire are not appealing looking people and never have been!
The jealousy be getting to em, playa haters disgust me on tha real! -Memo the Mafioso
If they would have said nothing and just let her fly, nobody would have been hurt, nothing would have happened, nobody would have *actually* been offended, the media wouldn’t have picked this up, and life would have just gone on.
Exactly. It is her bad taste so let her wear it. What happened to “mind your own business“?
Look like a ho, dress like a ho, talk like a ho. Probably a proper educated mannered refined lady.
Why don’t these amateurs learn to take a decent picture?
Oh, and that woman needs some basic makeup tips. She’s so over done she looks like a clown. And who decided having twigs coming out of your eyelids was attractive? Ironically, cover up what? She’s flat as a board! I thought it was a transgenic person at first…..
so how far is too far? Can she wear a bikini (after all its hot outside) , Can she wear lingerie? Can i man come in with a string top muscle shirt and bicycle shorts or some short shorts or a banana hammock, I mean remember what we judge as offensive others will not, so what is the standard where does it end
have literally seen all those things on planes, save for banana hammock, on men with no comment from anyone.
so yes. Experience says those are fine
No worries she’s a transwoman lol!
The newer style of wearing under garments as outerwear is tacky and tasteless. I don’t care what your economic, social, ethnic, gender, … class, you’re crying out for attention and have low values and esteem. The passenger who got kicked off must have behaved worse than described in the article. Anyone who lacks self control offends me worse than a provocatively dressed young woman.
Its good enough for the heiress of the “oh henry” candy bar fortune.
I’m more offended by the typos in news articles these days! Do people not edit their work before posting? 9 out of 10 articles I have read in the past two days have obvious errors!
Come on people, be professional!
I agree that the grammar needs editing, but so does some math. Nine out of ten equals one, or precisely zero point nine. Nine of ten is nine, if that was the intended equation.
“she” doesn’t look like a woman….with all that painted cake. looks like something else entirely…
Melinna Bobadilla sounds like she suffers from a perpetual persecution complex
Horrible so what if it’s hot , would it be ok for guys to wear speedo‘s ?and woman to wear Bikini tops and booty shorts ? Hell no when traveling you don’t have to look like hookers , no one wants to see what you have to offer , but at least dress like your momma thought you something growing up !!!!
Are people so stupid they define EVERY problem, disagreement or issue by race? Apparently chronic ignorance knows no bounds. Ain’t that right Jill Biden?
I’m with those of you who say let’s co-operate with the airlines. They have a right and an obligation to be considerate of everyone. Bc you don’t agree means nothing. Throwing out F bombs while calling yourself ppl of color verifies how low you will go. Acting childish over a polite request verifies the airlines judged u correctly. Your rude, loud mouthed co-passenger verified she needed to go too.
100% agreed
The lady found the Let’s Go Brandon t shirt offensive?
Why?
It’s not lawd…. I am sorry but she is wearing a full corset and does not even have her pants pulled up. Go look at her other Tik Toc videos and you notice a theme…..
Maybe the other people wearing more revealing things at least had their pants pulled up and were not wearing sweats….
Lastly I find it funny that the other passenger has blocked people from commenting on her BS post….
Isn’t it common knowledge that this attire is a standard dress code on Spirit. These women should fly the more appropriate airline which caters to their preferences. Wasn’t Spirit originally thought of as the airline choice for this subset? Southwest is a different story that doesn’t play when experiencing social terrorism.
Matthew Klint, I have a comment on a different aspect of this article. Your description of the “white knight” seatmate as an “older woman” is ageist. You repeatedly refer to her as an “older woman.” This is both untrue and inappropriate.
Let’s call the unrepentant passenger in the red corset “Jacy”. According to your screenshot, the Twitter screed is from a “Melinna Bobadilla.” If the photo attached to Melinna Bobadilla’s account is of Jacy’s ejected seatmate, she is not old at all! To my eyes, she looks like a mid-20something-year-old woman. Thirty, tops.
When I hear the term “older woman,” I picture someone in her 60s or 70s. Melinna Bobadilla may be oldER than Jacy–who looks not very much older than 20–but only by a few years, not by decades!
Melinna Bobadilla’s age (even relative age) is not relevant to the story. It does not seem to be a factor in her being escorted off the plane. When I first read the story, I thought that you, the writer, were trying to appeal to the reader’s sense of outrage over injustice or rudeness to a senior citizen. This is not the case at all.
I therefore submit that this is a case of ageism–irrelevant mention or undue emphasis on age. Also, I wasn’t sure if I detected a whiff of negative connotation with the word “older” in this story–is it implied that the other woman is less attractive, less sexy, shrill* (as in the trope of a “shrill old woman”), or even helpless (after all, she was booted off the plane)?
Please be aware of the descriptors you choose. If it’s not germane to the story, choose one that is either pertinent, or neutral (like “other woman,” or “seatmate,” both of which you also used–more appropriately). Thank you.
*I do think her screed rings as shrill! But that’s unconnected to her age.
I’ll tell you what’s offensive…that a 40 year-old is being referred as an “older woman”. How about just refer to her as a woman?
Not as in objectively old but as comparatively older than the other passenger.
Leave it to the Police flight attendants to decide.
C’mon! She’s wearing evening bedroom attire… no different than wearing pajamas. Isn’t it obvious she can barely afford common sense and manners, so she can only afford to fly commercial?
